MORE ABOUT RUNNING IN HAMBURG
The mother of all Hamburg running routes is the loop around the Außenalster, about 7.4 kilometers right in the heart of the city. If you want a park, run through Stadtpark Winterhude or Planten un Blomen; if you're after the Elbe, take the beach path (Strandweg) from Övelgönne to Blankenese, flat and with ships in view. In the west, the English-style Jenischpark and the sprawling Altonaer Volkspark beckon; in the northwest, the shady trails of the Niendorfer Gehege; in the east, the loop around Öjendorfer See.
Groups meet in almost every neighborhood — in St. Pauli, Altona, Ottensen, Eppendorf, Winterhude, or St. Georg. Before every run, you'll see when and where it starts and how fast it goes. Many meetups are free and explicitly welcome beginners. Just how big Hamburg's running scene is shows in the Haspa Marathon, Germany's largest spring marathon: for its 40th anniversary in 2026, around 46,000 people registered, selling out already in September.
A group in your neighborhood, the next event with one click — and suddenly you're not running alone anymore. The Alster loop isn't the best part because of your time, but because of the people running beside you, in every kind of weather. Come by and join in.
