MORE ABOUT RUNNING IN COLOGNE
Running in Cologne revolves around water and green space. The classic route follows the Rhine embankment and through Rheinpark; if you're after shade and soft trails, head to the Stadtwald (city forest) or loop the Inner Green Belt (Innerer Grüngürtel), the green ring that wraps around the city center. For long runs, people head out to Fühlinger See, where the fast groups also do their race-pace sessions, or to the quieter Decksteiner Weiher in the west.
Groups meet in nearly every Veedel — Cologne's own word for neighborhood — including Ehrenfeld, Südstadt, Nippes, Sülz, Deutz, and Lindenthal. Every meetup lists the day, time, meeting point, and pace in advance, so there are no surprises. Many runs are free and explicitly welcome beginners, with walk breaks and no pressure to perform. Just how big Cologne's running scene is becomes clear every autumn at the Cologne Marathon, which brought more than 37,000 runners to the streets in 2025.
Pick a group in your Veedel, grab a spot at the next event, and just show up. What makes Cologne special isn't the marathon days — it's the weekly run with people who are glad you showed up, and the coffee (or Kölsch) afterward. Find your group and run with us.
