UniLauf Köln 2027: 25th edition at the Aachener Weiher

The 25th UniLauf Köln (Cologne university run) takes place on Wednesday, 9 June 2027, once again at the Aachener Weiher pond (Source: unilauf.koeln, home page). It is organised by UniSport Köln, the university sports department of the University of Cologne together with the general university sports programme of the German Sport University (Source: unilauf.koeln, Veranstalter). But anyone can run, not just people from the university: in 2026 students, staff, families and runners from the region added up to just over 4,000 registrations, a new participation record (Source: unilauf.koeln, 2026 review). For the anniversary edition only the date and venue are fixed so far. Start times, prices and the registration opening for 2027 have not been published (as of 3 October 2026), so the 2026 figures below are for orientation.

One afternoon, six starts

The UniLauf isn't a single race but a whole afternoon of staggered starts. This was the programme on 10 June 2026 (Sources: unilauf.koeln, Startzeiten, Anmeldung/Startgeld and the individual race pages):

Start Race Laps of 2.5 km Cut-off Entry fee 2026
3:30 pm 1 km KIDS-Run (born 2015 or later) own 1 km loop – €5
4:30 pm 4 × 2.5 km relay 1 lap per person 1:00 h €24 per team
5:35 pm 5 km FUN-Run 2 45 min €12
6:30 pm 10 km TOP-Run 4 55 min €12
7:30 pm 10 km FITNESS-Run 4 1:30 h €12
7:30 pm Viva con Agua water-canister relay 4 × 1 – free

Both 10 km races share one results list (Source: unilauf.koeln, 10 km TOP-Run). The difference is the cut-off: in the TOP-Run you have to finish in under 55 minutes, in the FITNESS-Run you have an hour and a half and get refreshments on the way (Source: unilauf.koeln, 10 km FITNESS-Run). If you're unsure which to pick, choose the FITNESS-Run. The organiser explicitly describes it as a way into the 10 km distance (Source: unilauf.koeln, 10 km FITNESS-Run).

The loop around the pond and its two hills

Start and finish are right at the Aachener Weiher on the old Dürener Straße (Source: unilauf.koeln, Start und Ziel). You run a 2.5 km loop, two or four times depending on your race. It isn't flat: there are two small but demanding hills around the pond, the highest point being the top of the second hill right by the playground (Source: unilauf.koeln, Bergwertung). With a wink, the organiser calls the UniLauf "Germany's toughest inner-city hill race" and has long awarded a hill prize with a climber's jersey, Tour de France style. It goes to whoever gets over both hills fastest on the first lap of the TOP-Run and then also finishes in under 55 minutes (Source: unilauf.koeln, Bergwertung).

For your race this means: over 10 km you cross one of the hills eight times. If you go up too fast on the first lap, for the hill prize or out of excitement, you'll pay for it on lap three. Run the climbs by feel rather than by watch and win the time back on the flat sections. The TOP-Run course records show the loop can still be fast: 30:47 for men (Jonathan Dahlke, 2024) and 34:35 for women (Olga Kalenderova-Ochal, 2011) (Source: unilauf.koeln, 10 km TOP-Run).

Ultimate Challenge: three races in two hours

The most unusual format is the Ultimate Challenge: FUN-Run, TOP-Run and FITNESS-Run back to back, 25 km in three stages. You get three bibs, the three times are added up, and at the end the "Queen" and "King of the Weiher" are crowned (Source: unilauf.koeln, Ultimate Challenge). In 2026 the package cost €30 (Source: unilauf.koeln, Anmeldung/Startgeld).

Work through the 2026 schedule and you'll see how tight it is. The FUN-Run starts at 5:35 pm, the TOP-Run at 6:30 pm: if you need 20 minutes for 5 km, that leaves just over half an hour of rest. The TOP-Run has a 55-minute cut-off, and it applies to you too (Source: unilauf.koeln, 10 km TOP-Run). If you need all of it, you finish at 7:25 pm, five minutes before the FITNESS-Run starts at 7:30 pm. So if you want to take on the challenge, you should be able to run 10 km on tired legs and with hills well under 55 minutes. How fast the best are: in 2025 Marian Bunte won in 1:29:33 and Kim Friele in 1:54:56 (Source: unilauf.koeln, Ultimate Challenge).

From lecture hall to start line

The pond is right next to the campus, and the logistics are built around that. Bibs are available on the two days before the race at the UniSportZentrum (university sports centre) at Zülpicher Wall 1, in 2026 from noon to 7 pm each day, or on race day from 2 pm at the course, until one hour before your start at the latest (Source: unilauf.koeln, Startnummern-Abholung). You can also collect bibs for friends and colleagues if you look up their numbers in the start list beforehand. Timing is done by a transponder in the bib, so don't fold it (Source: unilauf.koeln, Startnummern-Abholung).

Showers, changing rooms and toilets are in the UniSportZentrum, about five minutes from the start. At the pond there is also a bag bus for well-packed sports bags and mobile toilets (Source: unilauf.koeln, Umkleiden, Duschen, WC). In practice: after your last lecture or shift, head to the sports centre, change, put your bag on the bus and go.

With your study group, institute or ward

At the UniLauf the group counts almost more than the time. Three formats are made for it:

For fast university runners there is also the NRW Uni-Laufcup. Since 2003, up to 100 runners have competed in teams of four for their university, scored at races in Dortmund, Cologne, Münster and Aachen (Source: unilauf.koeln, NRW Uni-Laufcup). In Cologne the TOP-Run counts (Source: unilauf.koeln, 10 km TOP-Run).

Preparing for early June

The June date is friendly for beginners: training falls in spring, with long light evenings. Start in March and you have a good twelve weeks. That's enough to go from zero to the 5 km FUN-Run or to run a 2.5 km relay lap comfortably. Because of the hills, don't only train on flat paths along the Rhine; add one route with climbs each week.

UniSport itself offers running courses that you can use to prepare specifically for the UniLauf, plus a 500-metre floodlit woodchip track on the sports centre grounds (Source: unilauf.koeln, Laufkurse). If you want company outside the university, you'll find Lauftreffs (group runs) and run clubs with weekly meet-ups under Running in Cologne. And if you already ran the Firmenlauf Köln (Cologne corporate run) at Fühlinger See with colleagues in spring, its 5 km in May are a good stepping stone on the way to the pond. All other dates in the city are listed under running events in Cologne.

Registration: keep an eye on spring

In 2026 registration opened on Tuesday, 17 March, and closed on Sunday, 31 May, at 11:59 pm. After that, remaining places were available for a surcharge until 7 June (Sources: unilauf.koeln, Anmeldung/Startgeld and race pages). The 2027 deadlines have not been published yet. Registration is linked on unilauf.koeln. One reason to be early: in 2026 the first 1,000 registrants and all children received a free UniLauf shirt, sponsored by EUROPA Versicherung (Source: unilauf.koeln, 2026 review).
