Running Events in Cologne 2027: From the Marathon to the Zoo Run

Cologne is a running city, and that shows well beyond marathon Sunday in October. Spread across the year there are races through the zoo and across six Rhine bridges, evening events at the Tanzbrunnen with a view of the Cathedral, corporate runs with 20,000 participants and, new this year, a half marathon that starts at the Fühlinger See lake and finishes in Zons. If you're new to Cologne or planning your first event, it's easy to lose track.

So this overview isn't sorted by date but by what suits you. Where the organizer has already confirmed the 2027 date, it's listed; where not, we give the date of the last edition for orientation. As of 28 September 2026.

Still in 2026: autumn in Cologne

The running year in Cologne is far from over – the season is just reaching its peak. On 4 October the Generali Köln Marathon starts with 40,990 entries, more than ever before (generali-koeln-marathon.de). If you're not racing yourself, cheer at Rudolfplatz, which both courses pass three times. Start times, the course and the shake-out runs the day before are all in our Cologne Marathon article.

After that things get quieter, but not empty. At the PINK-5K on 25 October everyone runs or walks 5 km around the Decksteiner Weiher lake, and €5 of every entry fee goes to Brustkrebs Deutschland, the German breast cancer charity (pink-5k.de). A week later, on Halloween, the Forstbotanischer Garten in Rodenkirchen becomes a costume course: the Sparda-Bank Halloween Run covers 5 or 10 km on a partly lit loop with a head torch, and the kids start earlier with the Candy Runs. Around 1,400 people took part in 2025 (halloweenrun-koeln.de).

The year closes with two traditional events. The Kölner Nikolauslauf on 6 December in the Stadtwald drew more than 4,750 participants in 2025, with a 10 km TopRun and a FunRun where you choose the number of laps (koelner-nikolauslauf.de). And on 31 December the GAG-Silvesterlauf runs through the car-free Merheimer Heide for the 50th time – from 10:50 am with the school race, 10 km in two start groups at 12 noon and 1 pm, and a New Year's pretzel at the finish (koelner-silvesterlauf.de).

The big classics: the rhythm of Cologne's year

If you're working towards a big race in Cologne, you'll usually plan around three dates that follow each other closely in late summer and autumn.

First comes the Kölner Halbmarathon on 29 August 2027. It starts at 10 am in the German Sport University's stadium and runs as a loop course through the Stadtwald. What makes it special: you only decide along the way whether to stop after 7, 14, 21.1 or 28 km. Around 2,800 took part in 2026 (koelner-halbmarathon.de). Its nickname, "Die Generalprobe" (the dress rehearsal), is no accident – for anyone running the marathon in October, it works well as the last long test.

Two weeks later comes the ASV Köln Brückenlauf on 12 September 2027. The half marathon crosses six Rhine bridges and is DLV-certified, so times count for the rankings; if you prefer it shorter, there's the "Kölsche Runde" over 11.11 km. According to ASV, almost 6,000 people started in 2026 (asv-koeln.de).

The highlight is the Generali Köln Marathon. The organizer hasn't published the 2027 date yet; in 2026 it was 4 October. Alongside the marathon and half marathon there's a relay marathon for teams of four and a school marathon (generali-koeln-marathon.de).

Spring: a good start to the running year

Winter is no break in Cologne. At the Leonardo Hotels New Year's Run on 10 January 2027 what counts isn't your time over a fixed distance but how many 3.5 km laps you manage in 60 or 90 minutes – a relaxed start to the year by the Stadtwald, with an optional brunch at the hotel afterwards (leonardo-hotels-neujahrslauf-koeln.de).

On 14 March 2027 comes the Kölner Frühlingslauf, also in the Stadtwald. Two worlds meet here: the 10 km TopLauf is about fast times, while in the FunRun you choose one, two or three laps of 3.4 km. Around 2,200 started in 2026 (koelner-fruehlingslauf.de).

New on the calendar is KöZon 21 on 21 March 2027. The half marathon runs point to point: start at the Fühlinger See, then along the Rhine to Burg Friedestrom castle in Zons. Because the finish is somewhere else than the start, the organizer takes your bag to the finish (koezon-21.de). If you're planning your first half marathon in the summer, it's an early fitness check – or the goal itself.

After work and evenings by the Rhine

From May to September Cologne's running year moves into the evening. The distances are short, the Cathedral is often in sight, and most events are timed so you can make it after work. For newcomers, this is the easiest season to start.

It begins with the ASV Köln Night Run on 5 May 2027. The start is at 9:15 pm at the Tanzbrunnen, and you decide along the way whether it's 5 or 10 km. More than 2,100 people finished in 2026 (asv-koeln.de). On 9 June the UniLauf at the Aachener Weiher follows in its 25th edition – open to everyone, not just students, with 5 and 10 km, a relay and a kids' run, and more than 4,000 entries last year (unilauf.de).

In July two Friday-evening classics come back to back. The Sparda-Bank Altstadtlauf on 9 July runs between the Rheinauhafen and the Old Town, 5 km at 7:45 pm, 10 km at 9 pm; €15 per entry goes to the Stiftung RTL – Wir helfen Kindern children's charity (altstadtlauf-koeln.de). A week later, on 16 July, the Kölner Zoolauf opens its gates: on a loop of around 1.6 km past the enclosures you choose between one and six laps. The FunLauf was sold out in 2026 (koelner-zoolauf.de).

The summer ends with the SportScheck RUN on 10 September 2027 over 5 or 10 km; the event shirt doubles as your race bib (sportscheck.com).

With your team: corporate runs

Corporate runs work differently from classic races: you usually register through your employer, the distance is short, and the main part often happens after the run.

The biggest is B2Run Köln. Around 5 km lead around the RheinEnergieSTADION, with the finish inside the stadium itself. On 9 September 2026, according to the organizer, 20,000 people from 930 companies took part – making it NRW's largest corporate run. The 2027 date is still to come (b2run.de).

Much smaller and by the water is the Firmenlauf Köln at the Fühlinger See: 5 km around the lake, then awards and a party on the Ruderinsel. On 7 May 2026 more than 2,300 took part from over 120 companies; the 2027 date is still open (firmenlauf-koeln.de).

A mix of corporate run and charity is the Kölner Leselauf on 12 May 2027: teams run 5 or 10 km at 7 pm through the RheinEnergieSTADION and the Stadtwald, and the proceeds fund reading clubs at Cologne schools (leselauf.de).

For a good cause

At Aidshilfe Köln's Run of Colours at the Rheinauhafen, costumes are explicitly welcome. You run 5 or 10 km or a 15 km relay; if you raise more than €25 in donations, your entry is free. On 19 September 2026 it raised €20,000; the 2027 date will follow (aidshilfe-koeln.de). PINK-5K, the Leselauf and the Altstadtlauf also raise money for good causes.

Triathlon, swimming and obstacles

If you're after more than running, Cologne has some unusual formats. With around 4,200 participants, the Köln Triathlon is NRW's largest triathlon according to the organizer: the swim is in the Rhine, the run crosses the Hohenzollern Bridge, and the finish is at the Tanzbrunnen. In 2026 it took place on 6 September; the 2027 date is still open (koeln-triathlon.com).

At the Fühlinger See, the Swim & Run on 13 June 2027 combines swimming on the regatta course with 5 or 10 km of running – if you only want to run, you start in the Lake Run (swim-run-koeln.de). The same venue hosts the Muddy Angel Run on 17 July 2027, a 5 km obstacle race with 18 stations for women only (muddyangelrun.com). And if you want to go up: the KölnTurm stair run climbs 40 floors and 732 steps, individually, as a team or as firefighters in full gear; in 2026 it took place on 21 June (koelner-treppenlauf.de).

In the neighbourhood

Alongside the big names there are the small events that turn a neighbourhood into a race course for a morning. The Bickendorfer Büdchenlauf ran through Bickendorf on 27 September 2026, with distances from 500 m to 10 km; the 2027 date isn't confirmed yet (bickendorferbuedchenlauf.de).

Nearby: IRONMAN 70.3 Duisburg

There's no IRONMAN in Cologne itself; the nearest is in Duisburg: IRONMAN 70.3 Duisburg on 29 August 2027 covers a 1.9 km swim, 90 km bike and 21.1 km run through the Sportpark Duisburg. The 2027 edition is already sold out (ironman.com).

Planning tips for your running year

Register early. Many Cologne events sell out long before race day: in 2026 the half marathon and relay at the Cologne Marathon were full, at the Zoolauf the FunLauf, and at KöZon 21 the first 250 places were gone before the first edition even took place. Several events also get more expensive the later you register – at the marathon and KöZon 21 by the number of places sold, at the Brückenlauf by registration date.

What it costs. The range is wide: from €15 for adults at the Silvesterlauf through the Leselauf (€26.50) and the ASV Night Run (€33) to the Brückenlauf half marathon (€55 to €69) and the marathon (€130).

Three places shape Cologne's running year. The Stadtwald in Lindenthal hosts the New Year's Run, the Frühlingslauf, the Halbmarathon and the Nikolauslauf. Along the Rhine between the Rheinauhafen and the Tanzbrunnen you'll find the Night Run, the Altstadtlauf, the Brückenlauf and the triathlon. And the Fühlinger See is the start of KöZon 21 and home to the Firmenlauf, Swim & Run and the Muddy Angel Run.

Don't train alone

A date in the calendar is the easy part. The harder part is sticking with it for weeks – especially when the half marathon in August means long runs in the June heat, or the Frühlingslauf in March means training in January. Cologne has plenty of running groups (Lauftreffs) and run clubs that prepare for exactly these dates together, from easy Sunday runs to evening interval sessions. And on race day it's nicer to know someone at the start. You'll find the right group near you among the running groups in Cologne.
