In 2027, the Hamburg Triathlon Open Races won't take place in July as usual, but on 11 and 12 September, in the middle of the SUZUKI World Triathlon Championship Finals, where world titles are decided from 8 to 12 September (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, registration and news). For age-groupers that means the same course around the Alster and Rathausmarkt, but with a world-championship backdrop, a later date and registration that has been open since 10 September 2026.
Don't mix them up: this page covers the Open Races over sprint and standard (Olympic) distance, organised by the Deutsche Triathlon gGmbH. IRONMAN Hamburg is a different full-distance race with its own organiser and date.

The first price tier covers the first 500 entries per distance; after that, prices rise with the number of entries, not by date (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, registration). Key deadlines from the race rules:
(Source: hamburgtriathlon.com, 2027 race rules)
Swim in the Binnenalster. The start is in the water, with around 150 people per wave (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, 2027 race rules). It's one lap; the first turn comes after 650 m on the standard distance and after 220 m in the sprint. Two things surprise many people: you swim through a roughly 40 m tunnel with poor light, and the exit is via wide carpeted steps that can still be slippery (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, courses). Whether wetsuits are allowed is decided by the head referee one hour before the start, based on DTU temperature tables (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, 2027 race rules). So bring both options.
Transition on Ballindamm. After about 200 m of carpet to the entrance, you reach a transition area more than 500 m long. The bike exit is at the far end near Glockengießerwall, the run exit at the start near the Europapassage shopping centre (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, courses). Walk the routes the day before, or you'll be hunting for your bike on race day.
Bike to the Elbe. The bike course is mostly flat with good tarmac. It gets technical at the 180-degree turns on the Lombardsbrücke and, on the standard distance, at Altona town hall. The steepest part is 5 per cent over 2 x 200 m per lap (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, courses). Drafting is not allowed (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, 2027 race rules).
Run along the Außenalster. From Ballindamm via Jungfernstieg and Neuer Jungfernstieg, the run heads north to the Außenalster (the outer Alster lake), flat, on cycle and footpaths with tarmac and sandy sections, and back to the finish on Rathausmarkt (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, courses). Aid stations are at km 0.5, 2.2 and 4.0 in the sprint, plus km 6.4 and 9.0 on the standard distance (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, courses). In runner terms: the sandy bits cost a little speed, so don't plan your pace there at tarmac level.
The format that suits a run club best is the team ranking. A team can be family, friends, a hobby squad or a community and doesn't have to be your club. It needs at least three and at most 50 people on the same distance; the best three count (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, 2027 race rules).
How it works:
The catch: anyone who joins during late registration or via an entry transfer can no longer start with the team. And anyone who books a preferred start wave individually is placed there first (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, 2027 race rules). So collect your sign-ups before 1 August 2027.
If you'd rather not do everything yourself, enter a relay: at least two people, one timing chip handed over in transition, and three open categories for women, men and mixed teams (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, 2027 race rules). There is also an optional women's start wave, free to book while places last (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, 2027 race rules). Companies can enter via the SUZUKI Firmencup (company cup), where a firm's three fastest employees automatically form a team (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, company cup).
Lauftreffs (group runs) where you can find teammates are listed under running in Hamburg.
The German Triathlon Union (DTU) offers free 12- and 20-week plans for sprint and standard distance on its TIME2RI platform (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, training). Counting back from Saturday, 11 September 2027:
The organiser is explicit: race day shouldn't be your first open-water swim, train with and without a wetsuit, and use the official test swim (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, training). Water quality in the Binnenalster is monitored by Hamburg's Institute for Hygiene and Environment; all tests were positive in 2026, and sampling for championship week won't start before 2027 (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, water quality).
To get some race practice on foot beforehand, check the city's races in our annual overview of running events in Hamburg.
In 2026, the German Triathlon Union reported more than 9,600 Open Race entries and over 13,000 people taking part across the weekend, including elite, para athletes and the Kids Triathlon in June (source: triathlondeutschland.de, press release July 2026). For championship week 2027, the DTU expects up to 4,000 age-group athletes from around the world for the world championship alone (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, news). Hamburg already hosted world championships in 2007 and 2023 (source: hamburgtriathlon.com, news).
