Münster Marathon 2027: date, registration, relay and course

The 25th Volksbank-Münster-Marathon takes place on Sunday, 12 September 2027 (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, home page). The start is at Schlossplatz in front of the palace, and the finish is on the flag-lined Prinzipalmarkt in front of the historic town hall (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, 2026 race information). September is a long way off, but the key dates fall this autumn and winter. In 2026 the relay, the 28 km race, the charity run and the health run all sold out, with waiting lists closed (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, event pages). If you want to run in 2027, know the registration dates.

Registration dates for 2027

The organiser has published a separate registration opening for each event (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, home page, as of 3 October 2026):

Event Registration opens
Marathon Monday, 2 November 2026
Westfalen Gruppe Charity Run (10 km) 2 November 2026
H+B technics Health Run (6 km) 2 November 2026
Wecker-28 (28 km) Tuesday, 1 December 2026
Atruvia Relay Marathon Wednesday, 9 December 2026
Stadtwerke Kids Marathon Spring 2027

Entry fees for 2027 have not been published yet. For reference: in 2026 the marathon cost €75 if you registered by 15 May, €85 by 1 August and €95 after that (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, 2026 race information). A relay team paid €140, the Wecker-28 cost €45 including a finisher medal and the health run €10 (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, relay, Wecker-28 and health run pages). In 2026 the relay was capped at 1,400 teams and the Wecker-28 at 500 runners (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, relay and Wecker-28 race information).

The small print matters: if you don't start, you get nothing back. If you add the €10 "money-back guarantee" when registering, you can return a marathon place for illness, work commitments or job loss with proof – in 2026 up to nine days before the race. Transferring your place to another runner cost €15 (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, 2026 race information).

Six ways onto the marathon course

Münster has no half marathon. Instead, almost every event uses part of the marathon course and finishes on Prinzipalmarkt. The 2026 start times (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, FAQ 2026):

Event Start 2026 Where
Marathon (42.195 km) 9:00 am Schlossplatz
Atruvia Relay Marathon (4 legs) 9:15 am Schlossplatz
Wecker-28 (approx. 28 km) 10:10 am Kardinal-von-Galen-Ring, at km 14
Stadtwerke Kids Marathon from 11:30 am Himmelreichallee
Charity Run (final 10 km) 12:00 noon Roxeler Straße, Münster-Roxel
Health Run (final 6 km) 1:00 pm Arnheimweg/Rüschhausweg, Gievenbeck

The organiser calls the Wecker-28 "most of the whole thing": two thirds of the marathon distance, meant for runners who aren't ready for 42 km yet – or for whom the full distance has become too much (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, Wecker-28). Minimum age is 18.

The charity run and the health run are not races. On the charity run everyone runs in two pace groups at 6:00 and 6:30 min/km, minimum age 14. Instead of a bib, the charity shirt is your ticket onto the course; in 2026 the entry fees went to the support association of the prostate centre at Münster University Hospital (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, charity run and relay pages). The health run is open from age 12, untimed, in groups at roughly 6:30 and 7:00 min/km (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, health run). For beginners it is the gentlest way to run down the red carpet on Prinzipalmarkt.

The relay: a marathon for your whole running group

The relay runs almost entirely on the original marathon course, split into four legs (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, 2026 relay information):

  1. approx. 10.5 km to the changeover at the Aasee lake (Weseler Straße/Scharnhorststraße)
  2. approx. 11 km to Nienberge (Altenberger Straße)
  3. approx. 10 km to Roxeler Straße/Dingbängerweg
  4. approx. 10.7 km to the finish on Prinzipalmarkt

A team usually has four members, with a minimum of two. There are men's, women's and mixed categories. The organiser asks for a 10 km time of 75 minutes or faster, and the minimum age is 14. A wristband serves as the baton. A shuttle runs to changeovers 2 and 3; changeover 1 is within walking distance of the start (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, 2026 relay information, FAQ 2026). One detail for the team photo: only the final runner is allowed into the finish area itself. The rest of the team meets at the relay meeting point just beyond it.

For a running group this is the most realistic way to run a marathon together: one person runs their first race over 10 km, another tests their form over 11 km. With 1,400 team places and a sold-out 2026 edition, it pays to put your team together before 9 December.

The course: city, countryside, Prinzipalmarkt

From the palace the course first heads through the old town and around the Aasee lake, then through open countryside via Nienberge towards Roxel. Via Gievenbeck it returns to the centre and onto Prinzipalmarkt (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, 2026 race information). After about a quarter of the distance the field leaves the city centre, and the suburbs are quieter (source: runnersworld.de, 2026 report). The organiser doesn't publish an elevation figure; the profile in the race information stays low throughout.

Quieter doesn't mean empty. The organiser speaks of around 300 artists and bands and more than 100,000 spectators along the route (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, marathon). "Power Points" concentrate the atmosphere: in 2026 they were at Aegidiitor, on Kardinal-von-Galen-Ring and in the centres of Nienberge, Roxel and Gievenbeck (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, marathon guide 2026). For your pacing, the old-town kilometres pull you along. The marathon guide explicitly warns against making up time lost at the start by going out too fast – it costs you dearly over the final kilometres (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, marathon guide 2026). Save some energy for the stretch between Roxel and Gievenbeck before the city pulls you home.

There are 17 aid and refreshment points, roughly every 2.5 km from km 5. Aid points serve water, an isotonic drink, fruit and, from km 25, cola; refreshment points serve water only. In 2026 you could hand in your own bottles until Saturday afternoon (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, FAQ 2026 and 2026 race information). Pacers with flags on their backs covered finish times from 3:00 to 6:00 hours. The cut-off is six hours (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, FAQ 2026).

Looking back at 2026: rain all day and a record field

The 24th edition on 13 September 2026 was run in constant rain. According to Runner's World, more than 13,000 people still started across all distances – more than ever before (source: runnersworld.de, 2026 report). Dickson Kiptoo won the marathon in 2:10:03, and Agrie Belachew Wole took the women's race in 2:28:43; both finished about a minute outside the course record. Lisa Huwatscheck ran 2:34:31 in fourth place, the fastest time ever by a German woman at the event. Team "Brillux 2" won the relay in 2:19:43, and Hendrik Pfeiffer lowered the Wecker-28 course record to 1:27:00 (source: runnersworld.de, 2026 report).

The marathon has been held since 2002, organised by the largely volunteer-run Münster-Marathon e. V. Even the first edition had 5,000 starters, according to the club (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, news). A September marathon is won in summer

12 September falls at the end of the summer holidays. Count back and the whole build-up lands in high summer:

What makes Münster special: the organising club itself helps you train in a group. In 2026 "MüMa on Tour" offered free preparation runs of 20 to 30 km in fixed pace groups on nine weekends before the marathon, organised with local Lauftreffs (group runs) and clubs. The tour began on 12 July in Appelhülsen and Bad Westernkotten and ended on 6 September in Hiltrup (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, news "MüMa on Tour 2026"). The 2027 dates have not been published yet. There is also a free mentoring programme: experienced marathoners lead training groups in and around Münster, and the club provides training plans and seminars (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, mentors).

Long runs in July are easier if you head out early before the heat and someone is waiting at the meeting point. You'll find regular group runs and run clubs on Running in Münster. If you want a summer tune-up race, check the running events in Münster. And if you fancy something different after the marathon, the Sparda Münster City Triathlon also takes place in the city.

Race day: start blocks and bib pick-up

Bibs aren't posted; you collect them on race weekend. In 2026 pick-up at the Gesamtschule Münster-Mitte school was open Friday 2–7 pm, Saturday 10 am–7 pm and on Sunday only 7–8:30 am (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, FAQ 2026). The organiser strongly recommends collecting before race day.

Start blocks are based on your marathon best: block 1 up to 3:00 hours, block 2 up to 3:30, block 3 up to 4:00, block 4 for everyone slower and all first-time marathoners (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, FAQ 2026). You can run the marathon if you turn 18 in the year of the race; running buggies and bike escorts are not allowed. In 2026 there was an after-run get-together at the school from 2 pm (source: volksbank-muenster-marathon.de, FAQ 2026).
