The 46th International Wilhelmsburger Insellauf takes place on Sunday, 4 April 2027, with start and finish at the Elbinselschule on Krieterstraße (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, info). You can choose between the Elbinsel half marathon, the Inselzehner over 10 km and the Haspa-Mühlenlauf over 5 km. Registration for 2027 is already open (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de). According to the organizer, the course crosses Europe's largest river island, past allotment gardens, towards the Dove-Elbe, along the dike and back to the finish on roads and farm tracks (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de).

The Insellauf is one of Hamburg's old Volksläufe (community road races). It was started in 1979 by Ursula Peters of the railway workers' sports club ESV Einigkeit von 1908; the first edition had no bibs, just start cards, and instead of a medal runners got a pin badge (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, history). To this day every finisher receives the railway medal, a tribute to the club's founders (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de). The sporting host today is SV Wilhelmsburg von 1888, and the organizer is BMS Die Laufgesellschaft (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, info).
The club history also explains why the race grew early on: its date, 14 days before the Hamburg Marathon, made it „ideal as a test or training run“ (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, history). In 2027 the gap is a little larger: the Haspa Marathon Hamburg takes place on 25 April 2027 (source: haspa-marathon-hamburg.de), three weeks after the Insellauf.
If you are training for the Hamburg Marathon, the Elbinsel half marathon works as a final big test before race day. Three weeks is a good gap: enough time to recover, and close enough to try out kit, fuelling and pace under race conditions. Some thoughts:
An official half-marathon PB is not on offer on the island anyway, at least not in 2026: because of course changes, the organizer said the courses did not count for record lists (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, course map). Whether that changes in 2027 has not yet been published.
For the weeks before, the organizer offers something unusual: a combined entry with the 11th Wilhelmsburg Winter Running Series. The series takes place on three Sundays, 10 January, 7 February and 7 March 2027 (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, info). If you sign up for both at the same time by 31 December 2026, you pay €26 for the winter series plus the fee for your Insellauf race, plus a €6 timing fee if applicable. The offer does not apply to under-20s and can only be booked on the Insellauf website (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, info).
That gives you a fixed race date on the island once a month through winter, and you get to know the area before it counts in April. For a running group training together for the Insellauf or the marathon, fixed dates in January, February and March are a good anchor against the winter slump.
The half marathon is a loop on tarmac and park paths through Alt-Wilhelmsburg, along the Dove-Elbe and the Moorwerder Elbe dike (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, info). The 2026 race report describes it in more detail: mostly tarmac, quite fast on longer stretches, with just one short, slightly slowing cobbled section. Some rural, village-like parts are narrow and twisty (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, 2026 race report).
What that means for you:
The half-marathon time limit is three hours: start 8:50, finish closes 11:50 (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, info).
Registration runs online via the registration page on the official website. The next price tier ends on 31 December 2026: until then the half marathon costs €30, then €35, and from 22 March 2027 €40. The Inselzehner costs €22, €25 and €30, the Haspa-Mühlenlauf €16 until 21 March and €19 after. Each entry adds a €3 timing fee unless you own a BMS chip (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, info).
Key points for planning:
The 45th edition brought another record: 5,045 entries, about 1,900 of them for the half marathon alone; the 10 km and 5 km had grown to 1,400 and 690 runners (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, info and 2026 race report). The year before, almost 3,700 runners took part, at the time the biggest race in 44 years (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, news).
The half marathon was won by Monier Rauter (Laufteam Hamburg) in 1:15:08 and Lili Schau from Neustadt in Holstein in 1:22:31. Over 10 km, Flavius Meinecke won in 34:30 and Paula Frederike Böttcher in 40:36; over 5 km, Leon Allers in 16:07 and Jane Endrulat in 19:34 (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, 2026 race report). After the finish there was live music, a cake buffet and a sausage stand on the school campus; the charity partner, the Hamburg bone-marrow transplant support association, raised €1,563.88 in donations (source: wilhelmsburger-insellauf.de, news).
Because the half marathon and the shorter races are separated in time, a group can split the day well: half-marathon runners finish around 11:00 and can then cheer on the 10 km and 5 km runners, who start at 12:10 and 12:30. For training together through the winter, you will find Lauftreffs (group runs) and run clubs under running in Hamburg. All other races in the city, from spring to autumn, are listed in the yearly overview of running events in Hamburg.
