Kölner Nikolauslauf 2026: Cologne's St Nicholas Run

The 29th Kölner Nikolauslauf (Cologne St Nicholas Run) takes place on Sunday, 6 December 2026 – this time, as the organiser puts it, "in the truest sense of the word" on St Nicholas' Day itself, which German children celebrate on 6 December (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, news of 24 April 2026). The race is a loop course through the Stadtwald (city forest) in Lindenthal, with start and finish on Kitschburger Straße. In 2025 more than 4,750 people took part, and the FunLauf (fun run) sold out almost two weeks before race day. If you want to be in the forest on St Nicholas morning, don't wait until late November.

TopLauf or FunLauf: the honest choice

The Kölner Nikolauslauf is one event with three races, and the most important decision comes at registration. The TopLauf at 10 am is for anyone aiming to run 10 km in under 55 minutes. It offers only the full distance, and the finish closes 55 minutes after the start (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Start & Ziel). In pace terms, you need to hold 5:30 per kilometre for three laps, in December. The organiser explicitly asks you to choose the TopLauf only if your personal best or realistic target time fits (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Ein Lauf | Drei Rennen).

The limit wasn't always this generous. In 2025 the organiser extended the TopLauf cut-off from 50 to 55 minutes because of high registration numbers, and offered FunLauf entrants the chance to switch (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, news of 27 October 2025).

The FunLauf at 11:35 am is for anyone who wants to run without pressure. The twist: you don't commit in advance. After each lap you decide whether to turn into the finish or add another lap – so 3.4, 6.7 or 10 km (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Ein Lauf | Drei Rennen). There is no individual ranking in the FunLauf; the results list counts the longest distance you ran (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Wertungen). That makes it a good first race with a bib, and it works for people who aren't sure after a November cold how far their legs will carry them.

Two things to know before you decide. First, switching races later is only possible at race pack pick-up and costs €5 (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Startunterlagen). In 2025, once the FunLauf was full, switching only worked from FunLauf to TopLauf, not the other way. And anyone registered for the TopLauf who ran in the FunLauf was not ranked and was taken out of the race (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, news of 25 November 2025). Second, the FunLauf was fully booked on 25 November 2025 (source: ibid.). If you want a FunLauf place, register early.

St Nicholas morning, worked backwards

The Nikolauslauf is a morning event, and the day starts earlier than the start times suggest. Here is how it looks if you work back from the gun:

For families, that gives a handy rhythm: if you run the TopLauf, you're back in time to cheer at the KidsLauf at 11:30. And if you'd rather start together with your kids, choose the FunLauf, which begins five minutes after theirs.

Cold, hats and what's not allowed

An early December morning in the Stadtwald is cold, and time passes between pick-up, waiting and the start. There are two tents for bags near the start, but they're unattended, so leave valuables at home (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, vor Ort). If you come with family, hand your warm jacket to someone at the roadside.

The rules on equipment are clear: dogs, running buggies and prams, walking poles, and headphones or music players are not allowed for safety reasons (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Anmeldung). So your playlist stays at home – instead there's a commentator and music at the start and finish.

Headwear, on the other hand, is very welcome, and it can be red. For every St Nicholas hat sold, the organiser donates €1 to the friends' association of the Lindenthaler Tierpark, a small animal park (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Charity). In 2025 you could also get running shirts printed with the race logo at Decathlon Marsdorf, €10 for printing plus the shirt (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, news of 28 November 2025). The organiser hasn't yet said whether that will be offered again in 2026.

On the course there's water and bananas plus a table for your own drinks. At the finish you get water, lemon tea, bananas, protein bars and a Gaffel ZER0,0 alcohol-free Kölsch or a Fassbrause (malt soft drink) (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, vor Ort).

Going with your running group

The Nikolauslauf works well as an end-of-year outing for a running group, precisely because the group isn't tied to one pace. The fast runners do the TopLauf at 10 am, everyone else the FunLauf at 11:35, where each person decides whether to stop after one, two or three laps. Once the TopLauf is done, those runners can cheer for the group in the FunLauf, because the loop passes the start/finish area after every lap.

Two things make organising easier: for five people or more, you can contact the organiser directly about a group or company registration (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Anmeldung). And if everyone is registered under the same club or group name, one person can collect all the race packs (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Startunterlagen). To find a group that trains together through to December, see the running groups in Cologne. For how to dress for cold and dark runs, read our article on running in winter.

Registration, prices and deadlines

You register online via the Kölner Nikolauslauf registration portal, linked from the official website. Registration has been open since 24 April 2026. Since 1 October, TopLauf and FunLauf cost €21; until the end of September it was €19. The KidsLauf costs €11, a chosen bib number €3 extra. The fee is collected by SEPA direct debit (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Anmeldung).

The online deadline is Sunday, 29 November 2026, at 8 pm. From 30 November, only late entry at race pack pick-up is possible, and only if the participant limit hasn't been reached. That adds a €5 late fee, paid in cash (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Anmeldung). In 2025 there were 200 late-entry places after the deadline, but only for TopLauf and KidsLauf (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, news of 1 December 2025).

If you can't start, there's no refund, not even for illness. Transferring your place to someone else is only possible at race pack pick-up, costs €10 and requires a signed authorisation and a copy of the registered person's ID. Buying or reselling places through third parties is expressly prohibited (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Anmeldung).

Who is behind the Nikolauslauf

The race is organised by the athletics club of the German Sport University Cologne and run by many volunteers from the club. The 28th edition on 7 December 2025 drew more than 4,750 participants in the best weather, as the club wrote in its review (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, news of 7 December 2025).

The Nikolauslauf is one of four events by the same club, alongside the Frühlingslauf (spring race) in March, the Zoolauf in July and the Kölner Halbmarathon in August (source: koelner-nikolauslauf.de, Partnerläufe). If you're planning a longer distance next year, our article on the Kölner Halbmarathon has the details.

Around St Nicholas' Day

The Kölner Nikolauslauf isn't the only event that weekend. On the same Sunday afternoon there's the Bonner Nikolauslauf in the Rheinaue park, and Neuss, Düsseldorf and Leverkusen follow with more events in December. All dates are in our overview of St Nicholas and Christmas runs in the Rhineland. If you're looking at Hamburg too, there's the St. Pauli X-Mass Run.

After St Nicholas comes New Year's Eve: the dates around the turn of the year are in our New Year's Eve runs in the Rhineland, and for 1 January see the New Year's Day runs 2027. For the whole Cologne running year, see our page on running events in Cologne.
