Running Events in Wuppertal 2027: Schwebebahn-Lauf, Fuchslauf and Rund um Wuppertal

Wuppertal runs along the Wupper and on the heights above it. Once a year the B7 in Unterbarmen is closed, and the Schwebebahn-Lauf field starts directly beneath the steel frame of the Schwebebahn (suspension railway). On the Nordbahntrasse, the former railway line across the city, head torches light up in November, and in December runners head out from Cronenberg across the Wupperberge towards Müngsten. Then there are the districts: Vohwinkel with its Fuchslauf, the Bayer-Sportpark with a Volkslauf (open fun run) that has existed since 1967, the woods around Küllenhahn with a cross triathlon, and the Beyenburger Stausee (reservoir), where the relay once around the city starts and finishes.

Still in 2026: torches on the Trasse, trails above the Wupper

Until the end of the year, Wuppertal has two dates on which no clock is running.

On 7 November 2026 at 5 pm the Fackel-Lauf Wuppertal (torch run) starts for the twelfth time, on the Nordbahntrasse level with the Sportcenter Eskesberg. It's run in the dark with a head torch: 5 km as an out-and-back course or 10 km with a second lap. There's no timing, and part of the proceeds goes to a good cause. Since 2014 the Fackel-Lauf has been part of the programme of the Schwebebahn-Lauf e.V. (schwebebahn-lauf.de).

On 19 December 2026 the eleventh edition of the Bergischer-Wupperlauf follows. It's explicitly not a race but a guided group run without time pressure: from the Gartenhallenbad Cronenberg (indoor pool) it goes on trails across the Wupperberge towards Müngsten and Glüder, over 50 km, the marathon distance of 42.2 km or 25 km, plus a 20 km hike. Parts of the course and the aid stations are in Solingen, the start and finish in Wuppertal. The group is limited to 300 people; 220 took part in the tenth edition on 4 January 2026 (feinerlauf.de). If you want to try long distances off-road without racing the clock, this is the right setting.

June: the Schwebebahn-Lauf

On 13 June 2027 the Schwebebahn-Lauf Wuppertal takes place for the 15th time. The start is on the B7 at the Friedrich-Engels-Allee, level with Zur Dörner Brücke in Unterbarmen, and the race is run on the road, closed to traffic, beneath the Schwebebahn. In 2026 the organizer counted more than 8,500 registrations – registrations, not finisher numbers (schwebebahn-lauf.de).

You can choose between the Sparkassen-Halbmarathon over 21.1 km, 10 km and 5 km, plus school races over 2 and 4 km and a 500 m Bambinilauf (toddlers' run). The 5 km race is also Wuppertal's Firmenlauf (corporate run): alongside the individual ranking there's a team and a company ranking, so you can line up with colleagues while others in the same field run their first event. According to the organizer, registration for 2027 opens in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Late June: Vohwinkel and once around the city

A week after the Schwebebahn-Lauf, things get more familiar. The Vohwinkeler Fuchslauf is planned for 19 June 2027; it's the 13th edition. The Vohwinkeler STV offers 10 km, 5 km and 3.2 km, plus 5 km Nordic walking and children's races from 400 m to 1.6 km. Around 70 helpers from the club carry the event; according to the organizer there were just under 700 registrations in 2026, children's races included (vstv.de).

Regularly at the end of June, the calendar has Rund um Wuppertal (around Wuppertal) by the LG Wuppertal, a relay once along the city boundary. Ten runners share 100 km as a team over ten stages of between 6 and 15 km, on forest and field paths, with start and finish at the Beyenburger Stausee. Since 2025 there's also the half distance for teams of five. The 44th edition was scheduled for 28 June 2026, was cancelled because of heat and made up on 6 September 2026. The 2027 date is still pending (rund-um-w.de).

September: Volkslauf and cross triathlon

In September 2026, two club events fell on one weekend.

On 19 September 2026 the Wuppertaler Volkslauf took place for the 59th time. It has been held since 1967, and since 2021 the SV Bayer Wuppertal has hosted it in the Bayer-Sportpark. There are 10 km, 5 km and school races. The club hasn't published the 2027 date yet (sv-bayer.de).

A day later, on 20 September 2026, the Wuppertaler Sparkassen Crosstriathlon of the Tri Club Wuppertal headed into the woods around Küllenhahn. The "Bergischer Hammer" means 0.75 km of swimming, 28 km on a mountain bike and 10 km of running, individually or as a relay. The "Bergisches Hämmerchen" is the shorter variant over 0.5 km, 14 km and 5 km. In 2026 the race was fully booked. The 2027 date hasn't been published yet (triclub-wuppertal.de).

Nearby: IRONMAN 70.3 Duisburg

The nearest IRONMAN race is around 45 km to the west: the IRONMAN 70.3 Duisburg on 29 August 2027. The swim is 1.9 km on the regatta course in the Sportpark Duisburg, followed by 90 km on the bike across the Brücke der Solidarität towards Moers and a half marathon over three laps in the Sportpark (ironman.com).

Planning tips for your running year

Be early for the Schwebebahn-Lauf. Registration for 13 June 2027 opens in the fourth quarter of 2026. If you want to line up with your company, it's best to sort out the team in winter.

Places are partly limited. The Bergischer-Wupperlauf takes at most 300 people, and the Crosstriathlon was fully booked in 2026.

Several 2027 dates are still pending. For Rund um Wuppertal, the Wuppertaler Volkslauf and the Crosstriathlon, the organizers haven't named a date yet. The 2026 dates give you orientation; the organizer's website is binding.

Don't train alone

Wuppertal's year peaks in June: the Schwebebahn-Lauf and the Fuchslauf are only a week apart, and for Rund um Wuppertal you need a team anyway. Training for the half marathon beneath the Schwebebahn is easier in a group, and you might find your relay teammates there straight away.
