Since 2003, company teams from across the Märkischer Kreis district have run through central Lüdenscheid on a Friday evening. The 23rd edition is announced for 9 July 2027.

The AOK-Firmenlauf im Märkischen Kreis (Firmenlauf = corporate run) is named after the district but takes place in one town: Lüdenscheid, with start and finish on the Rathausplatz (town hall square) and around six kilometres through the town centre (sources: lauf-im-kreis.de, terms of participation; luedenscheid.de, press release of 1 July 2026). The 23rd edition has been announced for Friday, 9 July 2027, with registration due to open in spring 2027 (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, news). The evening has been organised since 2003 by the Turbo-Schnecken Lüdenscheid, by its own account the largest sports club in town (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, about us).
It shares its name and partner with other AOK corporate runs, but not its course, rules or organiser. How the runs relate is explained in the AOK Firmenlauf overview.
Don't mix them up: there is a second AOK corporate run in the Sauerland region, the Sauerländer AOK Firmenlauf in the Sauerlandpark in Hemer. In 2027 it takes place earlier, on 3 June, over 6.1 kilometres, with registration opening on 14 November 2026 (source: sauerlaender-firmenlauf.de). This page is about the corporate run in Lüdenscheid.
The idea was born in Frankfurt in 2002: an AOK team ran in the JP Morgan Chase corporate run there, together with the Hellersen sports clinic, several companies and the Märkischer Kreis district. A year later the Turbo-Schnecken organised the first corporate run of their own in Lüdenscheid. They expected about 500 participants; on 24 July 2003, 3,500 came from 223 companies (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, about us).

The organiser has not yet added a 2026 figure to its statistics but calls that edition a "record event" (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, news). The town of Lüdenscheid announced more than 7,100 participants in advance (source: luedenscheid.de, press release of 1 July 2026), and the entry list on the organiser's site shows 371 companies and 7,242 registered participants (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, participants). The list is notable for its range, too: alongside large employers there are nurseries, schools, local courts, medical practices and trades businesses from Lüdenscheid, Halver, Plettenberg, Kierspe, Werdohl and neighbouring towns (source: ibid.).
According to the organiser, the run is a road race of approx. 6 km through the town centre that can be run or walked (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, terms of participation). In 2026 the town published the route street by street: from the Rathausplatz via Knapper Straße, Herderstraße and Friedrichstraße, then Bahnhofstraße, Altenaer Straße, Sternplatz, Sauerfelder Straße, Weststraße, Parkstraße, Winkhauser Straße, Heedfelder Straße, "Am Neuen Haus", Ludwigstraße, Wehberger Straße, "Wermecker Grund", Mathildenstraße and back via Knapper Straße to the finish on the Rathausplatz (source: luedenscheid.de, press release of 1 July 2026).
The stretch via Knapper Straße and Herderstraße was a diversion in 2026: normally the field turns right straight into Friedrichstraße, but that was closed for weeks because of excavation works (source: luedenscheid.de, press release of 1 July 2026). The exact 2027 route has not been published yet. The organiser does not publish an elevation profile.
The 2026 race started at 7:30 pm (sources: luedenscheid.de; radiomk.de, report of 3 July 2026). From 6:45 pm, roads including Heedfelder Straße, Altenaer Straße, all of Weststraße and Sauerfelder Straße were closed, some town-centre car parks could not be entered or left for a while, and the Sauerfeld bus station could not be reached by buses on the town-centre side (sources: luedenscheid.de; radiomk.de). If you come by bus or park in the centre, plan to arrive before 6:45 pm.
One detail sets the Lüdenscheid run apart from many other corporate runs: the entry fee is low and only due afterwards. In 2026 it cost €11 per person; team captains received an invoice for the whole team after the race, payable within 14 days. Part of the entry fees is donated (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, terms of participation). Nothing is refunded if registered people do not start (source: ibid.).
The system is simple: each company appoints a team captain who can register any number of colleagues and change the list until the entry deadline, which in 2026 was 18 June (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, terms of participation). One week before the race, team captains collect bib numbers at the "Schneckenhaus" sports and club centre at Bräuckenstraße 95, where they also receive information on getting there, parking and changing facilities (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, registration).
Employees of companies and public bodies in the Märkischer Kreis and surrounding area aged 15 and over can take part, with no upper age limit (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, terms of participation). The organiser explicitly hopes for teams that connect generations "from the fresh apprentice to the almost-retired" (source: ibid.). Walking is allowed; only Nordic walking with poles, scooters, e-scooters and animals are excluded (source: ibid.).
That gives your team a plan. There are just over 39 weeks until 9 July 2027, and registration opens in spring. Still, start asking around at work now who wants to join, and split people roughly into three groups: those who already run, those who want to walk the six kilometres, and those in between. For the middle group, a plan from April with two or three sessions a week alternating running and walking is enough. By July most people can run the six kilometres without stopping. Walkers simply train with brisk one-hour walks.
The companies themselves show that it works. A business with around 20 employees writes on the organiser's site that it has taken part in every edition since it was founded in June 2002, naming the team spirit and the food as reasons alongside the running (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, home page). Another manufacturer says it has been there since the first run in 2003 (source: ibid.). If your team wants to train together regularly, you will find Lauftreffs (group runs) in the region under running in the Sauerland.
There is a stage programme before the start and an after-run party with live music on the Rathausplatz afterwards (source: radiomk.de, report of 3 July 2026). Behind the finish line the refreshment partner serves alcohol-free beer (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, home page). The evening relies on volunteers: every year the club looks for helpers for food stalls, drinks and course marshalling (source: lauf-im-kreis.de, volunteering). So even if you are not running, you can still be part of it.
All races in the Sauerland are listed in the annual overview of running events in the Sauerland. To compare corporate runs in neighbouring regions, see our pages on the AOK-Firmenlauf Dortmund, the AOK-Firmenlauf Bochum and the EWR*Firmenlauf Remscheid.
