A loop course through Bochum's city centre starting at the Bermuda3Eck, with around 4,000 participants and a free group run at Kemnader See. Here's what the 2026 edition offered and what you can already plan for 2027.

The Stadtwerke Halbmarathon Bochum is a loop-course event right in the city centre: start and finish are at the Bermuda3Eck, Bochum's nightlife quarter, and the course passes the Musikforum concert hall, runs through the old town and along the Waldring (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Strecke). The most recent edition took place on Sunday, 6 September 2026, with around 4,000 participants (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de). The 2027 date has not been published yet (as of 3 October 2026). If you are planning ahead, pencil in early September and keep an eye on the organiser's website.
What sets this event apart from many city races: there is a free group run (Lauftreff) that prepares you specifically for race day, and a half-marathon relay that lets a running group start together. And the loop is more honest than the word "flat" suggests.

The day starts at 9:00 with three simultaneous starts: the half marathon, the USB half-marathon relay and the school relay. The 5 km follows at 11:55, the 10 km at 12:30, and in the afternoon there is a 2.2 km school run for children born 2011 to 2018 and a kids' run of about 250 metres for those born 2019 or later (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info). The cut-off is 11:40 for the half marathon and relays, and 13:50 for the 5 and 10 km (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info).
The schedule has a handy side effect: if you run the half in the morning, you can cheer on friends in the 10 km afterwards, and families can stay for the kids' races. Nordic walking, inline skates, dogs, prams, wheelchairs and handbikes are not permitted (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info).
The organiser calls the course a flat, fast loop, but also gives a number: approx. 150 metres of elevation gain in the half marathon, "flat with short climbs" (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Strecke). The course is certified by the German athletics federation (DLV), fully paved, and in the half marathon consists of a 2.2 km intro lap plus three big laps of about 6.3 km each. The 10 km covers two 5 km laps with about 50 metres of climbing, the 5 km a single lap (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Strecke).
For you as a runner, that means the short climbs come back every lap, three times in the half. If you go out too fast on the first big lap, you pay for it on the third. The organiser itself advises holding back on lap one because the start atmosphere sweeps you along (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Strecke). A good approach is to treat the laps as three blocks: lap one controlled, lap two at goal pace, lap three whatever your legs allow.
Two sections shape the loop. The Waldring is quiet and shady, according to the organiser, and that is where the pacers run. The old town with its narrow lanes is one of the loudest stretches, and you pass the Bermuda3Eck twice per lap (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Strecke). Plan your gels and sips so you don't need them in the middle of the noisiest crowds.
There are four aid stations, which you pass several times on the loop. All have water, three also offer an isotonic drink, several have bananas and one adds cooling sponges (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Läuferservice). Early September can be warm, so the sponges matter.
The pacers come from the local club LGO Bochum. They run only in the half marathon and carry a flag showing their finish time (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Läuferservice). In 2026 these times were offered:
| Goal time | Pace per km |
|---|---|
| 1:30 h | 4:15 min |
| 1:40 h | 4:44 min |
| 1:45 h | 4:58 min |
| 2:00 h | 5:41 min |
| 2:10 h | 6:09 min |
| 2:30 h | 7:06 min |
| 2:40 h | 7:35 min |
Source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Läuferservice.
The pacers gather in the start area about 15 minutes before the gun (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Läuferservice). The 2:40 group runs exactly at the time limit. If you are unsure about your goal, start with a slower group and move up on the third lap.
What makes Bochum special is the open training that belongs to the event. The Stadtwerke Lauftreff (group run) meets every Tuesday at 18:00 during the season from May, at the blue:beach on Kemnader See lake, free and without sign-up. It has been run by LGO Bochum since 2006 (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Lauftreff). It is on its winter break until spring.
There are five pace groups: beginners at about 6:30 min/km, easy runners at about 5:45, ambitious at about 5:00, performance at about 4:30 and a lead group under 4:15 min/km (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Lauftreff). The beginner group targets the 5 km, the fast groups a sub-1:30 half. You can switch groups at any time. Getting there, according to the organiser: from Bochum Hauptbahnhof take tram line 308 towards Hustadt/Kemnade to the Kemnader Straße stop, then walk about five minutes (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Lauftreff).
Count backwards: if the 2027 date falls in early September again, there are about 17 weeks from early May to race day. That is enough to go from the beginner group to 10 kilometres, or for a full half-marathon plan. Tuesday at the lake becomes your fixed session and the long run goes on the weekend. Until May you can train with a group in town. You'll find group runs in Bochum on our page Running in Bochum.
The USB half-marathon relay splits the 21.1 km between four people. In 2026 the legs were 5.2 km (start to Christstraße / GLS Bank), 5.2 km (to the Waldring), 6.3 km (to the Waldring on the second lap) and 4.4 km (to the finish at the Bermuda3Eck) (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info). The bib with its built-in chip is handed over at the exchange zones. Prizes went to the youngest and oldest team and the fastest women's, men's and mixed teams; registration was done by the team captain (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info).
For a running group this is a good middle ground. The fastest person takes the 6.3 km, whoever has just reached 5 km takes the short final leg into the finish. At €80 per team, or €20 per person, the relay was cheaper in 2026 than a solo 10 km entry (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info). Plan the routes between exchange zones in advance so everyone is in place for their handover.
Registration runs via raceresult.com; the page for the next edition is not open yet (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info). In 2026 there were two price tiers: early bird until 30 June and regular until the online deadline on 26 August. After that, entries were only possible on site, with a €5 surcharge and while places lasted (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info). Pupils, trainees and unemployed people paid the lowest rate with proof.
Worth reading the small print: there were no refunds in 2026. Transferring a bib to another person cost €5 and was possible until the registration deadline (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info). A PUMA finisher shirt could be pre-ordered for €25.
When registering you could donate €1, and the club added another euro for every finisher. The money goes to Aktion Canchanabury, which supports AIDS orphans in sub-Saharan Africa. The half marathon has been the organisation's official charity run since 2021 (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Charity).
In 2026 bibs were handed out on Saturday from 16:00 to 19:00 and on Sunday from 7:30 at the LIDL car park at the Bermuda3Eck / Viktoriastraße. You needed the email with your bib number and photo ID (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info). The organiser recommends Saturday because it's calmer.
From the main station, tram lines 308 or 318 take about two minutes to the Bermuda3Eck / Musikforum stop. Your bib does not count as a ticket (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info). By car, the P1 garage at Husemannplatz is closest and opens at 7:00. Many roads around the course are closed on race day (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info).
At the finish you get a medal with a Bochum skyline design, drinks, fruit, a shower bus and optional physiotherapy. The timing chip is built into the bib and doesn't need to be returned (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Läuferservice). In 2026, age-group winners in the half marathon and the winning relay teams were honoured at an evening event on 10 September at the TV Wattenscheid clubhouse (source: stadtwerke-halbmarathon.de, Info).
