MORE ABOUT RUNNING IN BOCHUM
The classic route is Kemnader See in the south: a flat, roughly ten-kilometer loop right along the water. If you're after forest trails, head into the Weitmarer Holz or down into the Ruhr valley; for something central and green, there's the Stadtpark and the old slag heap in Westpark by the Jahrhunderthalle. For steady, even kilometers, try the car-free Erzbahntrasse with its wide-open views, and for a quick loop in between, there's Ümminger See in the east.
Groups meet in almost every neighborhood — downtown, in Ehrenfeld, Langendreer, Weitmar, Wattenscheid, or around the university in Querenburg. Every group lists when, where, and how fast they run. Plenty of sessions are free and explicitly aimed at beginners, with walk breaks built in if needed. Just how much Bochum loves to run shows in the Stadtwerke Halbmarathon, which hit a record of around 4,250 participants in 2025.
Find a group near you, grab a spot at the next event, and just show up and run. The best thing about running in Bochum isn't a half-marathon personal best — it's the weekly loop around the lake with people from the Pott who simply enjoy running together. Lace up and join in.
