Giro di Monaco 2027: Charity Run on Munich's Altstadtring

Once a year, Munich's Altstadtring – the ring road around the old town – is closed to cars along its entire length so that thousands of people can circle it on foot, on wheels or in a wheelchair. The Giro di Monaco is a charity run of just under 5 km, clockwise, with a total elevation difference of 8 metres (source: giro-di-monaco.de). There is no timing and there are no bibs, and the proceeds go to Bellevue di Monaco's projects for refugees in Munich (source: giro-di-monaco.de). More than 11,000 people took part in 2026 (source: giro-di-monaco.de).

2027 date: spring, day still to be announced

The organiser has announced that the Giro di Monaco will take place for the sixth time in spring 2027. An exact date has not been published (as of 3 October 2026). According to the website, registration for 2027 opens in December, and volunteers can sign up from January 2027 (source: giro-di-monaco.de). For orientation: the last edition took place on Sunday, 17 May 2026, with the start at 11 am (source: giro-di-monaco.de, press release of 17 March 2026).

What it's about

The Giro is not a race but a statement in running shoes. The organiser describes it as a sporting sign for democracy and against racism, meant to show that Munich remains "stably democratic, tolerant and open to the world" (source: giro-di-monaco.de). The 2026 motto was "Vielfalt statt Einfalt" (diversity, not simple-mindedness) (source: press release of 17 March 2026). The patron is Lord Mayor Dominik Krause, who took over the role in 2026 from former mayor Dieter Reiter (source: giro-di-monaco.de).

The money goes to the work of Bellevue di Monaco, a social cooperative that has supported refugees since it was founded. It is currently planning a centre for education and vocational training with an attached teaching bakery (source: giro-di-monaco.de, company teams). In 2026 the fundraising target was 125,000 euros, and it was reached (source: giro-di-monaco.de, donation barometer). According to the organiser, several sponsors – including the publisher C.H. Beck, the Edith-Haberland-Wagner foundation and Erdinger alkoholfrei – help make sure participants' donations go to the social cause despite the organisational effort (source: press release of 17 March 2026).

How registration works

You register with a form on the website and can donate at the same time. Families, companies, clubs and other groups use the group registration (source: giro-di-monaco.de). Worth knowing: the amount you pay is a donation, not an entry fee, so there are no invoices. Up to 300 euros, the payment receipt or bank statement is enough for the German tax office; above that, Bellevue issues a formal donation receipt on request (source: giro-di-monaco.de, company teams). Donations are not refunded if you withdraw, don't start, or the event is cancelled due to force majeure (source: giro-di-monaco.de, terms of participation).

The Giro comes with a running shirt that you pick up beforehand at Bellevue di Monaco; in 2026 pick-up started in mid-April (source: press release of 17 March 2026). Shirts are handed out while stocks last, with no guarantee of a particular size (source: giro-di-monaco.de, terms of participation). In 2026 they were gone by the Friday before the run. If you still have a shirt from an earlier year you're welcome to wear it – or any other shirt (source: giro-di-monaco.de).

Race day: what's there and what isn't

Because the Giro takes place on a ring road in the middle of the city, the infrastructure is deliberately lean. That helps with planning:

There's an info point in the start and finish area on Blumenstraße at Corneliusstraße, and the team also answers questions beforehand at Bellevue di Monaco on Müllerstraße (source: giro-di-monaco.de).

With your running group: one lap, many paces

Without a clock or a bib, the question shifts from "how fast?" to "with whom?". That's what makes the Giro appealing for running groups where people train at very different speeds. Everyone is explicitly welcome – running, rolling or strolling, including families with children or pets (source: press release of 17 March 2026). In 2026 there were two hours between the start at 11 am and course closure at 1 pm for just under 5 km (source: giro-di-monaco.de), so nobody gets rushed.

A few ideas for how a group can spend the day:

You'll find Lauftreffs (regular group runs) and run clubs to train with through the spring on our page Running in Munich. All the city's races across the year are listed in our overview of running events in Munich.

With a company team

Companies can register staff as a company team via the group registration, and the organiser provides dedicated information for this (source: giro-di-monaco.de, company teams). The key difference from a classic corporate run: at the Giro there is no team ranking and no timing, and the amount is a tax-deductible donation rather than an invoiced entry fee (source: giro-di-monaco.de, company teams). If you want to race colleagues against the clock, B2Run Munich is the better fit.

Volunteering

An event this size only works with volunteers. Above all, people are needed to secure the closed junctions and explain diversions to drivers, plus help with catering and drinks in the start and finish area. In 2026 volunteer shifts ran from 8:45 am to 1:30 pm, meeting at Blumenstraße by the main fire station. The organiser recommends bringing a bike, scooter or skateboard to get around the ring quickly (source: giro-di-monaco.de, volunteering). The 2027 sign-up form is due to go online from January 2027 (source: giro-di-monaco.de).

Five editions since 2022

Bellevue di Monaco has organised the Giro since 2022, from the start together with the sports agency flowmotion from Gmund (source: press release of 17 March 2026). In 2025 almost 10,000 people took part and the 125,000-euro target was exceeded (source: press release of 17 March 2026). In 2026 there were more than 11,000, and the 125,000-euro target was reached again (source: giro-di-monaco.de).

Munich's spring has a second charity event with a very different format: the Wings for Life World Run in the Olympic Park also has no finish line, but there you run until the Catcher Car catches you.
