Wings for Life World Run Munich 2027: Entry, Format, Tips

The Wings for Life World Run has no finish line. You run, walk or roll as far as you can until the Catcher Car overtakes you – a moving finish line that sets off 30 minutes after the start (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, race format). Everyone around the world starts at the same moment. The next edition is on Sunday, 9 May 2027, at 11:00 UTC, which is 1 pm in Munich (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, Munich location). Germany's Flagship Run takes place in Munich's Olympic Park, and 100% of entry fees go to spinal cord research (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, Munich location).

The date that really matters: 4 November 2026

For Munich, the critical date is not race day in May but the day registration opens. According to the organiser, that is Wednesday, 4 November 2026 (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, 2026 highlights). Until then, the Flagship Run is listed as "Coming Soon" on the location page, where you can sign up to be notified (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, Munich location).

Why it matters: for the 2026 edition, all 14,000 places in Munich sold out within a few days in November 2025 (source: t-online.de, May 2026). If you want to start in Munich with your running group, agree beforehand who registers when – and don't wait until the evening of 4 November to check. The 2027 entry fee has not been published yet (as of 3 October 2026).

How the Catcher Car works

The idea is simple, yet it changes everything you know about race tactics. Everyone starts in the same minute, all over the world. Half an hour later, the Catcher Car begins its chase and gradually overtakes runners and wheelchair users until everyone has been caught (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, race format). The moment it passes you, your race is over, and your distance is your result.

In 2026 the Catcher Car started at 14 km/h and got faster every 30 minutes (source: t-online.de, May 2026). The exact speed schedule for 2027 has not been published yet. The race format page does have a calculator showing when the car will catch you: if you want to reach 15 km, it overtakes you after 1:31:52, which equals a pace of 6:07 per kilometre (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, race format). Enter your own goal there before you settle on a training plan.

Pacing without a finish line

Because the car keeps speeding up, this event rewards different tactics from a classic 10K or half marathon. A few thoughts for your plan:

A May goal that starts in winter

From registration to race day is just over 26 weeks. Count back from 9 May and you can see when things need to happen:

If you have a big autumn goal, the World Run also works as a spring test. Our guide to the Munich Marathon covers what happens in the city in October.

Bring your running group to Munich

The World Run is rarely a solo experience. The organiser builds on teams: Jürgen Klopp and Felix Neureuther were team captains in 2026, and fans anywhere could join their teams (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, 2026 highlights). It works with your own running group too: register together, set a distance goal together and see who stays ahead of the car the longest.

For the weeks before, you'll find Lauftreffs (regular group runs) and run clubs with weekly meet-ups on our page Running in Munich. The city's races across the year, from New Year's Eve to the marathon, are listed in our overview of running events in Munich.

On the Saturday before the 2026 race there was a Runners' Village at the Olympic grounds, with photos in front of the Catcher Car, a pasta party, a shakeout run and a yoga mobility session (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, 2026 highlights). If you're travelling from elsewhere in Germany, plan the weekend from Saturday.

If Munich is sold out: the App Run

No Flagship Run place? You can still take part. In the App Run the Catcher Car is virtual and you start at the same time, wherever you like (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, Munich location). In 2026 the app entry cost 25 euros, and there were organised App Run Events around Munich, for example in Garching, Puchheim, Holzkirchen, Rottach-Egern, Bad Tölz and Bad Aibling (source: t-online.de, May 2026). Across Germany there were 85 such events, 32 more than the year before (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, 2026 highlights).

Looking back: 10 May 2026

The global start went off at exactly 1 pm, fired in Munich by the Feldmoching ceremonial gun club. From Hans-Jürgen-Vogel-Platz the route ran through the Olympic Park and out of the city towards Dachau and Fürstenfeldbruck. The Catcher Car was driven by open-water swimmer Nathalie Pohl and ski racer Emma Aicher (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, 2026 highlights).

Esther Pfeiffer won the women's Flagship Run in Munich with 60.33 km, second worldwide. Her husband Hendrik Pfeiffer ran with her from the marathon mark, also reached 60.33 km and finished second in the German men's ranking. That ranking was won by Tim Schwippel with 63.75 km – using the app, not in Munich. Imke Salander was third in the global women's ranking with 52.51 km. The global wins went to Mikky Keetels of the Netherlands (62.24 km) and Jo Fukuda of Japan (78.95 km), his third in a row (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, 2026 highlights).

Where the money goes

The event is run by the Wings for Life foundation, a non-profit that funds spinal cord research with the aim of finding a cure for paralysis. It says it has supported 344 research projects so far (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, mission). In 2026, 9.2 million euros were raised worldwide; since the first World Run in 2014 the total is 69.7 million euros from more than 2.2 million participants (source: wingsforlifeworldrun.com, 2026 highlights).

Another charity event in Munich, completely different in format, is the Giro di Monaco: just under five kilometres on the car-free Altstadtring (old town ring road), with no timing and no bibs. In 2026 it took place on 17 May, a week after the World Run (source: giro-di-monaco.de).
