H/21 Half Marathon Hanover 2027: 5 pm start, finish at the opera

The H/21 Half Marathon is Hanover's newest running event: start at the enercity headquarters on the Glocksee, finish after just over 21 kilometres in front of the opera house, gun at 17:00 (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, course and FAQ). The first edition took place on 11 October 2026. The second edition is announced for Sunday, 10 October 2027 (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, timeline). The organiser is eichels GmbH, which also stages the ADAC Marathon Hannover in April (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, imprint and home page).

Before the first edition, more than 4,000 people had registered according to the organiser (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, news of 30 September 2026). Results of the 2026 race were not available at the time of writing; for 2027 this page relies on what the organiser published for 2026.

H/21 or the April half?

Hanover has two half marathons from the same organiser, and they are very different. The half marathon at the ADAC Marathon Hannover takes place on 11 April 2027, starts from 11:30 in four waves and closes at 16:00 (source: marathon-hannover.de, half marathon). It is part of a big marathon weekend, with pacers for 1:30 to 2:30 hours (source: marathon-hannover.de, half marathon).

H/21 is a stand-alone autumn race with a different concept: a start into the dusk, a route with out-and-back sections where runners see each other on the big ring roads, and music along the course (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, news of 8 September 2026). Ran your first half in April? H/21 gives you a second target in the same year, six months later.

An evening half: planning race day differently

A 17:00 start shifts your whole day. Most runners know the morning-race routine: get up early, small breakfast, go. At H/21 you get a long morning instead, and that needs a plan.

Take the Stadtbahn (light rail) to Glocksee for the start; Kröpcke station is close to the finish (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, FAQ).

What the cut-offs mean for your pace

The time limit is 3:00 hours from crossing the start line. In 2026 there were also three cut-off points at fixed clock times: km 11.4 at 18:50, km 15.2 at 19:23 and km 18.8 at 19:54 (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, course). Counting back from the 17:00 gun:

Point Cut-off 2026 Time since gun Pace needed
km 11.4 18:50 1:50 h approx. 9:39 min/km
km 15.2 19:23 2:23 h approx. 9:24 min/km
km 18.8 19:54 2:54 h approx. 9:15 min/km
Finish (21.1 km) 3:00 h from start line – approx. 8:32 min/km

Our own calculation based on halbmarathon-hannover.de (course, FAQ).

Two things stand out. First, the required pace gets stricter towards the end: start at an easy ten minutes per kilometre and you'll just make the first cut-off but then need to speed up. Second, the cut-offs are clock times, so if you start far back and cross the line a few minutes after 17:00, your buffer shrinks. For beginners: if your realistic goal is close to three hours, stick with the pacers. In 2026 pacer teams ran every ten minutes from 1:20 to 3:00 hours (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, FAQ). Our 10K to half marathon training plan shows how to step up.

The course: crossovers and 18 hotspots

From the start on the Glocksee the route passes the town hall and Aegidientorplatz to the finish in front of the opera house (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, news of 8 September 2026). The course is officially measured and record-eligible, with a split at 10 km (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, for you). The organiser offers the course map as PDF and GPX (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, course).

For 2026, 18 hotspots with DJs, bands, cheerleading teams and run clubs were announced, every 400 metres according to the organiser (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, hotspots and news of 30 September 2026). There were five aid stations:

Kilometre Aid 2026
4.6 water, isotonic drink
8.1 water, isotonic drink, bananas
11.4 water, isotonic drink
15.2 water, isotonic drink, liquid gel
18.8 water, isotonic drink, bananas

At the finish on Opernplatz, 2026 runners got protein snacks, fruit and alcohol-free beer, plus a finisher medal (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, for you).

H/21 for Two: sharing the distance

Not ready to run 21.1 km alone? Share it. In "H/21 for Two" the first runner covers about 11 km and the second about 10 (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, FAQ). In 2026 the handover was at Leibnizufer by the Nanas sculptures, at km 11, and a meeting point at Georgsplatz, about 400 metres before the finish, let both runners cross the line together (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, for you). A good format for two people from the same running group: one with half marathon ambitions for the longer first leg, one with 10K experience for the second.

To train through the summer for the autumn, find a Lauftreff (group run) on Running in Hanover. In 2026 run clubs also stood along the course as cheering teams (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, hotspots).

If you don't start, the entry fee is not refunded according to the terms (source: halbmarathon-hannover.de, terms). With more than 4,000 entries for the first edition, the cheapest tier went quickly in 2026. The newsletter on the official H/21 site is the easiest way not to miss the 2027 registration opening.

Hanover's running year

H/21 fills an autumn gap in Hanover's calendar. In April comes the ADAC Marathon Hannover with marathon, half marathon and relay. Another evening race is the SportScheck RUN Hannover. A week after H/21, Berlin hosted the Müggelsee Half Marathon in 2026, a nature half as a counterpoint to a city course. All other dates are in the overview of running events in Hanover.
