Cologne Half Marathon 2027: The Dress Rehearsal for Autumn

Five weeks before the Cologne Marathon, in the middle of the Stadtwald (city forest): for many runners in the region, the Kölner Halbmarathon (Cologne Half Marathon), organised by the athletics team of the German Sport University, is the last serious test before the autumn marathon. The 28th edition starts on Sunday, 29 August 2027, at 10 am – with a format that is rare: everyone starts together, and how far you run is something you only decide along the way, lap by lap. In Cologne's running calendar the race carries the fitting nickname "Die Generalprobe" (the dress rehearsal) (laufen-in-koeln.de).

Three half marathons, three events: a quick guide

If you search for "half marathon Cologne", you'll land on three different races. This article is about the Kölner Halbmarathon at the end of August in Müngersdorf: a loop course through the Stadtwald, start and finish in the German Sport University stadium, 2,800 places.

The Generali Half Marathon is part of the Generali Köln Marathon in October, starts in Deutz and ends at the Cathedral; in 2026 all places were taken there (generali-koeln-marathon.de/halbmarathon). Everything about it is in our article on the Cologne Marathon. The 2027 date is listed in the DLV (German Athletics Association) competition calendar as 3 October (leichtathletik.de).

New is the 21KÖLN Half Marathon, which has its premiere on 9 May 2027 – on its own loop course with start and finish in the MediaPark. Date and details are on the event page for the 21KÖLN Half Marathon.

Registration and places for 2027

You register exclusively online at koelner-halbmarathon.de, paying by SEPA direct debit. If you sign up by 31 January 2027, you pay €52, after that €57. The entry fee includes an adidas running shirt and the finisher medal; a bib number of your choice costs €3 extra. The online registration deadline is Sunday, 22 August 2027, at 8 pm; after that, the only option is late registration at bib pickup while places remain – for a €15 surcharge and in cash only (koelner-halbmarathon.de/anmeldung).

Don't count on those leftover places. In 2026, online registration was closed before race day, and the organiser then released another 48 late-registration places – 10 of which were still left the day before the race (koelner-halbmarathon.de, posts of 24 and 29 Aug 2026).

Important for planning: entries are non-refundable, even in case of illness. Transferring your bib to another person is only possible at bib pickup, with a copy of ID and a power of attorney, for €15. Dogs, strollers, walking poles and headphones are not allowed on the course.

The course: a 7 km loop through the Sportpark and Stadtwald

Start and finish are in the athletics stadium of the German Sport University. According to the course map from the DLV measurement, each lap first heads north along the Olympiaweg, past the West- and Ostwiese towards the RheinEnergieSTADION (km 1), then south through the Sportpark Müngersdorf to the Adenauerweiher (km 2). From there it goes east into the Stadtwald until just short of the Militärringstraße (km 3), loops back and down to the Dürener Straße (km 5). Via the Bert-Fenger-Straße (km 6) and along the Jahnwiese, the lap returns to the stadium over the Junkersdorfer Straße.

The course is DLV-measured and eligible for best-performance lists; the organiser asks runners to keep to the right so that faster runners can pass (koelner-halbmarathon.de/der-lauf/start-und-ziel). The longest distance covered is the one that counts (koelner-halbmarathon.de/der-lauf/wertungen). The organiser doesn't state the elevation gain.

Looking back at 2026: 2,206 finishers

According to the results list, 2,206 participants finished the 27th edition on 30 August 2026: 1,729 over the half marathon distance, 185 over 28 km, 191 over 14 km and 101 over 7 km. Seth Frazer (Engelhorn Sports) won the half marathon in 1:10:38 and Dr. Greta Fischer in 1:25:43; over 28 km, Till Lüchtefeld (Bunert – Der Kölner Laufladen) was first in 1:48:11 and Michele Meisel in 2:01:10. The median half marathon time was 2:08 (results list, Frielingsdorf Datenservice, net times).

Using the dress rehearsal: pace, fuelling, kit

If the half marathon falls on 29 August 2027, there are five weeks until the Cologne Marathon on 3 October and four until the Generali Berlin-Marathon on 26 September (bmw-berlin-marathon.com). The Mainova Frankfurt Marathon took place on 25 October in 2026; for 2027 the organiser's site doesn't give a date yet. That is exactly the gap in which a test race can still change something without endangering your last long runs.

Pace: 21 or 28 kilometres?

The organiser itself recommends the four laps over 28 km to marathon starters as preparation (koelner-halbmarathon.de/der-lauf). That gives you a long run with timing, a closed course and aid stations – ideal for running the last kilometres at your planned marathon pace. If you want to check your form, run the three laps as a proper half marathon.

An analysis of the 2026 lap times shows what matters: of the 1,729 half marathon finishers, 68.5 percent ran their third lap slower than their first, and a good third lost three minutes or more doing so. The 28 km finishers, by contrast, ran remarkably evenly: their median lap times were 39:32, 39:03, 39:28 and 39:37 minutes (our own analysis of the results list). For the dress rehearsal, that means the first lap is a test of your discipline, not of your legs.

The format has another advantage: you don't have to commit in advance. If your legs feel heavy after two laps, you turn off towards the finish instead of grinding through a bad race.

Fuelling: your own table at the Jahnwiese

At the stations on the left and right at the Jahnwiese there is water and bananas, plus tables for your own drinks (2026 participant information). Because you pass the stations every 7 km, you can practise exactly what counts on marathon day: grabbing your own bottle or gel at race pace and getting it down. Only test what you also plan to take in October. At the finish, you'll find water, lemon tea, bananas, bars from Maxi Nutrition and Gaffel ZER0,0 (koelner-halbmarathon.de/der-lauf/duschen-umkleide).

Kit: everything as in October

Run in the shoes, socks and clothes you have planned for the marathon – chafing after 21 or 28 km shows you in good time what doesn't fit. The bib with the chip attached goes on the front of your shirt (koelner-halbmarathon.de/der-lauf/zeitnahme). And because headphones are banned, the race is also a good test of whether you can stay in rhythm without music.

August heat

Start at 10 am, finish cut-off at 2 pm: if you're slower, you run into the middle of the day, and at the end of August it can still be summery warm in Cologne. A large part of the lap runs through the Stadtwald, but the advice still holds: on warm days, ease back your target pace, drink early and regularly, and don't read a slower time as a verdict on your marathon form. More on this in our article on running in the heat.

Training for the end-of-August date

Your preparation falls in June, July and August – the warmest weeks of the year. If you're running the half marathon for the first time, the training plan from 10 km to the half marathon offers a build-up that fits the date. If you're not there yet, take the 7 or 14 km as your first race – anyone born 2013 or earlier can start. Which races are coming up in Cologne before and after is shown in our overview of running events in Cologne.

Getting there and race-day schedule

The easiest way is Line 1 to Junkersdorf, from where it's about a five-minute walk to the stadium; alternatively, the RheinEnergieStadion stop, about seven minutes away. If you drive, the paid car park P6 on Salzburger Weg is available from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm (koelner-halbmarathon.de/der-lauf/anreise-parken). You'll find changing rooms, showers and bag drop in Halls 9 and 10 next to the stadium. It's best to pick up your bib on Friday or Saturday – then Sunday morning stays calm.

Long summer runs in a group

Long runs in July and August are often a slog on your own, and much easier with others. Many Cologne run clubs and running meet-ups prepare for the autumn together, and some of them also started in Müngersdorf themselves in 2026. If you're looking for company, you'll find them among the running groups in Cologne.
