Münster Triathlon 2027: 20th edition in the harbour on 20 June

The Sparda Münster City Triathlon takes place on Sunday, 20 June 2027. It is the 20th edition, which the organiser Tri Finish Münster is billing as its 20th anniversary (source: muenster-triathlon.de, home page and registration page). Registration is not open yet; the organiser expects to open it in February (source: muenster-triathlon.de, registration). That sounds like plenty of time, but it isn't: in 2026 every individual and relay place was taken within 30 minutes (source: muenster-triathlon.de, registration opening 2026). If you want to race here, the first thing to plan is not your training but an evening in February.

What is confirmed for 2027 and what isn't

The date and the anniversary are confirmed. The race rules (Ausschreibung), prices and schedule for 2027 have not been published yet (as of 3 October 2026). The table below shows the 21 June 2026 edition as a guide.

For the Olympic distance you need a German triathlon licence (Startpass) or a day licence, which cost €21 as an add-on in 2026 (source: muenster-triathlon.de, Ausschreibung). Relay teams have three members (source: muenster-triathlon.de, relay page).

The harbour is the stadium

Despite the "City Triathlon" name, the race isn't centred on the old town but on the harbour. Start, transition and finish are all in the harbour area, and spectators line the adjoining harbour promenade (source: muenster-triathlon.de, traffic information).

Swim: Entry and exit are at Hafenplatz, level with the district-heating tower. It's a deep-water start: the whole wave lines up in the water and goes on the signal. The course runs anticlockwise around the harbour basin – the sprint turns after just under 250 metres, the Olympic distance swims almost to where the harbour meets the Dortmund-Ems Canal (source: muenster-triathlon.de, courses). Whether wetsuits are allowed or compulsory is decided on race day based on water temperature (source: muenster-triathlon.de, Ausschreibung).

Bike: From transition you ride via Albersloher Weg onto the ring road, with 180-degree turnarounds. The sprint rides one lap; since 2026 the Olympic distance branches off towards Handorf, past the Lützow barracks and back via Lauheider Straße – a single 40 km lap (source: muenster-triathlon.de, courses). The organiser describes the ring road as the place to "really pick up speed" (source: muenster-triathlon.de, sprint page).

Run: From Hafenweg you run to the canal, north to the Manfred-von-Richthofen-Straße bridge, back along the other bank and over the Albersloher Weg bridge to the finish. The Olympic distance runs this loop twice (source: muenster-triathlon.de, courses).

For runners this means a flat, straight run with two bridge ramps per lap. Coming off the bike, what you'll notice on the canal is how long a straight promenade can feel. Break the lap into sections between the bridges rather than staring at the finish.

One day in three stages

In 2026 the day had a clear order: the Olympic distance started at 9:30, with the first finishers expected around 11:20. The sprint went off in waves from 12:15, the last at 13:45 together with the relays. The inclusion race started at 13:30. Everyone had to finish by 16:00 (sources: muenster-triathlon.de, spectator info, sprint and inclusion pages).

The inclusion category stands out: it is open to everyone "regardless of prerequisites or limitations", including athletes on handbikes or other adapted bikes (source: muenster-triathlon.de, inclusion). Athletes who need support may be accompanied on the run course; for everyone else that is not allowed (source: muenster-triathlon.de, Ausschreibung).

Cut-offs in 2026: sprint athletes had to be off the bike 1:30 hours after their start, Olympic athletes after 2:30 hours, and they had to begin their second run lap within 3 hours (source: muenster-triathlon.de, Ausschreibung).

The February evening: be ready

In 2026 registration opened on Sunday, 1 February, at 18:00, online only via Datasport. The organiser had raised the number of places to 2,800 and expected around 3,200 athletes in total (sources: muenster-triathlon.de, Ausschreibung and 2026 news). After 30 minutes everything was gone, with no waiting list (sources: muenster-triathlon.de, registration opening 2026 and Ausschreibung).

What this means for 2027:

Counting back from 20 June

The run is the part you can most easily train with others. Münster has plenty of Lauftreffs (group runs) and run clubs with fixed weekly sessions – see running in Münster. For a relay drawn from your running group, all you need is one swimmer and one cyclist.

Spectating, parking, getting there

The event area is closed to bikes except participants' bikes; racks are provided outside (source: muenster-triathlon.de, traffic information). If you drive, there are two car parks: the Cineplex car park opposite the venue with a €6 daily maximum (watch the entry height if your bike is on the roof) and the Hafenmarkt car park at €2 per hour, which you can leave even while the race is on (source: muenster-triathlon.de, travel).

For spectators, the organiser recommends the transition zone in particular, when the fastest are already getting off their bikes while the last swimmers are still climbing out of the water (source: muenster-triathlon.de, spectator info).

What comes after June

If the triathlon leaves you wanting a pure running race, September brings the Volksbank Münster Marathon, relay included. All of the city's races are listed under running events in Münster. Planning a bigger triathlon season in the region? Triathlons in NRW 2027 covers more races, such as the Cologne Triathlon or, as a step up to middle distance, IRONMAN 70.3 Duisburg.
