On 19 September 2027 the race returns to a flat, certified loop through Wandsbek. How the September race differs from the hella half marathon and how to use the summer for training.

Hamburg has two half marathons that are easy to mix up. The PSD Bank Halbmarathon Hamburg is the flat one in September, with start and finish in front of the Quarree shopping centre in Wandsbek. The next edition is on Sunday, 19 September 2027 (source: haspa-marathon-hamburg.de, event calendar). Registration for 2027 has not opened yet, but the 2026 details give a good idea of what to expect. And if you want a half marathon PB in September, there is one thing you have to get right: a summer full of training.

The hella hamburg halbmarathon is a separate event run by a different organiser. It was planned for the summer and in 2026 was moved to 25 October 2026 because of a heatwave (source: hamburg-halbmarathon.de, news). So if you're searching for "Hamburg half marathon October", you mean the hella. This page is about the September race in Wandsbek.
The organiser describes the course as flat and very fast (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, half marathon course). It is a loop of 21.0975 kilometres measured according to DLV (German athletics federation) and AIMS rules, with the measurement certificate filed with both. Your time therefore counts for official rankings (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, participant info).
From Wandsbeker Marktstraße the course runs through the Wandsbek district to its northernmost point at Berne underground station and then back via Rahlstedt and Tonndorf to the Quarree. Spectators and bands line the route (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, homepage). The organiser calls Wandsbek "Hamburg's greenest district" (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, half marathon course).
The course records show how fast it is: 1:01:15 by Simon Boch and 1:09:51 by Esther Pfeiffer, both set in 2024 (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, course records). In 2024 Wandsbek hosted the German half marathon championships, as it had in 2021 (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, news of 15 November 2023).
In 2026 there were two pacers each for 1:30, 1:45, 2:00 and 2:15, recognisable by flags on their backs (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, participant info). That's worth using for a PB: run the first kilometres with the group for your target time, not ahead of it. Aid stations were at km 5, 10, 15 and 17.5, with bananas at 15 and 17.5 and gels at 15 (source: ibid.). If you want to use gels, try the brand in training first.
A half marathon in mid-September has one quirk: the most important weeks fall in July and August. Count back from race day:
How hot a Hamburg summer can get was shown in 2026 by the hella hamburg halbmarathon, which had to be moved because of a heatwave (source: hamburg-halbmarathon.de, news). For you that means the risk is not race day but the training weeks before it. Fixed sessions with others help you head out at 7 am even when it's 28 degrees. You'll find Lauftreffs (group runs) with regular weekly times under Running in Hamburg.
The September date also fits an autumn marathon. If you're running in Cologne or Frankfurt, you can build the Wandsbek half into your plan as a fitness test, run as a controlled effort at marathon pace rather than an all-out race.
This is how race day ran in 2026; the organiser will publish the 2027 details with the race announcement:
In 2026 anyone turning at least 16 in the event year could take part (source: ibid.). For children there is the Kids Race over 2.1 kilometres; in 2026 it was sold out with almost 360 starters (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, news of 7 September 2026). The Hamburg championships are also held as part of the event (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, participant info).
Registration for 2027 has not opened yet (as of 3 October 2026, source: halb-marathon.hamburg, registration). For 2026 it opened on 20 November 2025, and prices then rose in steps: €35 until 20 December 2025, €40 until 20 March, €45 until 20 June, €50 until the deadline on 9 September and €60 for online late entry from 10 to 16 September 2026 (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, participant info). Whether 2027 follows the same pattern has not been published. With this system, registering early saves a fair amount.
A place can be transferred for a €12 fee (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, participant info). The half marathon did not sell out in 2026: a week before the start there were still places left (source: halb-marathon.hamburg, news of 7 September 2026).
2,751 runners finished in Wandsbek in 2026, 1,702 men and 1,049 women. Fastest were Christian Hiller (Laufteam Hamburg) in 1:10:43 and Lili Schau (TSV Neustadt) in 1:14:42 (source: my.raceresult.com, 2026 results, gun times).
One week before the PSD Bank half, the Airport Race Hamburg over 10 miles takes place on 12 September 2027 (source: airportrace.de). A good final fitness test if you take it easy. All Hamburg races of the year are listed under running events in Hamburg.
