Running Events in Freiburg 2027: From the Marathon at the Messe to the Mountain Races in the Black Forest

In Freiburg, the Black Forest begins at the edge of town, and you can tell from the running year. On one side are the classic city events: a marathon with start and finish at the Messe that leads past the Seepark, the Dreisam and the Schwabentor, a corporate run that finishes inside SC Freiburg's stadium and several events in the Seepark, from a triathlon to a 24-hour relay. On the other side, things go uphill: since 2026 a trail run has led straight out of the city over the Schauinsland, and in the valleys around Freiburg small mountain races on the Kandel, the Roßkopf, the Toter Mann and the Belchen have been running for many years.

This overview shows which events are coming up and who they suit. Where the organizer has already confirmed the 2027 date, it's listed; otherwise we give the date of the last edition for orientation. As of 29 September 2026.

Still in 2026: 24 hours in the Seepark

Before the end of the year, Freiburg itself has one more date, and it's a special one: a rescheduled date. The 24h-Lauf für Kinderrechte (24-hour run for children's rights) was supposed to take place on 27 and 28 June 2026 but was cancelled because of the heat. The new date is 3 and 4 October 2026, and registration is open (24hlauf-freiburg.de).

Teams from companies, clubs, schools and groups of friends run laps as a relay on the 400 m track in the Seeparkstadion for 24 hours. You divide up the time however you like, and walking, strolling or taking part in a wheelchair are all possible. The money comes from sponsors who pay per lap run or a flat amount, and it goes to regional projects for children and young people. In 2025 teams ran for the 19th time, and 43 teams were on the leaderboard. If you can put a team together, you'll spend a night in the stadium here.

On the same weekend, the Black Forest Trailrun Masters start north of Freiburg in Elzach, and a week later the Schwarzwald-Marathon follows in Bräunlingen – both are covered in the section on the Black Forest.

Spring: marathon at the Messe and trails on the Schauinsland

In April, Freiburg has two faces. On asphalt the city runs its marathon, and in 2026, a week later, a race went over the city's local mountain for the first time.

The Mein Freiburg Marathon is the city's biggest running event if you add up all the races: according to the organizer, around 13,200 participants took part in 2026 across the marathon, half marathon, 10 km, school marathon and children's race. The 22nd Mein Freiburg Marathon takes place on 4 April 2027, organized by the FWTM together with the Baden Athletics Association (Badischer Leichtathletik-Verband). Start and finish of all races are at the Messe Freiburg, and the loop course leads past the Seepark, the Dreisam and the Schwabentor, among other places. Alongside the marathon and half marathon there's the 10 km AOK-Gesundheitslauf and the badenova Schülermarathon (school marathon) as a relay; the day before, children run between around 400 and 1,800 metres at the Badeparadies-Mini-Marathon. Registration for 2027 has been open since 1 September 2026 (mein-freiburgmarathon.de).

The Freiburg Trailrun, which made its debut on 18 April 2026, is something completely different. From the Möslestadion it leads straight out of the city onto Freiburg's local mountains, and the finish is at the FT-Sportpark. The Kybfelsen-Trail is around 18 km with 650 m of climbing, the Schauinsland-Trail around 34 km with 1,400 m of climbing over the summit of the Schauinsland, which still belongs to Freiburg. According to the organizer, around 600 people came to the first edition, and both courses were sold out. A 2027 edition has been announced, along with a new ultra trail of around 60 km; the date and the ultra course are still to come (freiburg-trailrun.de).

With your team: B2Run Freiburg

Measured by registrations, B2Run Freiburg is the city's biggest running event: more than 14,500 people registered for the 9th edition on 30 June 2026, a record. The roughly 5 km lead around SC Freiburg's Europa-Park Stadion, and at the end you finish inside the stadium. Teams from companies and institutions can take part, running or walking. The 2027 date hasn't been published yet (b2run.de).

For a good cause: Wiehre and Seepark

Besides the 24-hour run, Freiburg has two smaller charity runs with short loops that are well suited to your first race with a bib.

The Rainforest Run is organized by a volunteer association with live music, and entry fees and donations go to a rainforest project. You start at the Alter Wiehrebahnhof on a 2.6 km loop through the Wiehre and along the edge of the Sternwald, once, twice or three times: 2.6, 5.2 or 7.8 km. There's also Nordic walking, 1 km children's races and an inclusive run. The 7th edition on 14 June 2026 had 1,370 registrations and €20,154 in donations, both records. There's no date for 2027 yet; recently it has been in May or June (rainforestrun-freiburg.de).

In the Seepark you'll find the Charity Walk & Run, organized by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organization in around 25 places across Germany. In Freiburg it took place for the eighth time on 12 September 2026, starting at the Seebühne, over 10 km, a 5 km run, 5 km walking and 800 m for children. The entry fees go in full to non-profit organizations, in 2026 to the Förderverein für krebskranke Kinder Freiburg (support association for children with cancer) and Humanity First; the results list had 481 names (charity-walk.de).

Triathlon: Seepark and cross

The Seepark is also the centre of triathlon in Freiburg. The LEXWARE Freiburg Triathlon of the Tri-Team Freiburg took place for the 28th time on 5 July 2026. The swim is in the Flückigersee, the bike course is in the west of Freiburg around the Mooswald and the Industriegebiet Nord, and the run goes around the Seepark. You can choose the Olympic distance over 1.5, 40 and 10 km, also as a relay, and a Jedermann (open) distance over 400 m, 20 km and 5 km, for which you don't need a licence. In 2026, 417 individual starters and 29 relays reached the finish. The 2027 date is still to come (triteamfreiburg.de).

Small, but with a long history, is the FT/SVK Cross-Triathlon of the Freiburger Turnerschaft and SV Kirchzarten, which took place for the 32nd time on 25 April 2026. After 750 m in the FT's indoor pool, without a wetsuit, you set off in a pursuit start onto 17.7 km of mountain biking with 460 m of climbing and a 7.7 km trail run through the forests in the east of the city. The field is capped at 40 individual starters and 15 relays; a 2027 date hasn't been published yet (svkirchzarten.de).

Around Freiburg: mountain races and trails in the Black Forest

The following events aren't in Freiburg itself but in the surrounding area, most of them less than half an hour away in the valleys and on the summits around the city. They're small, usually with 170 to 470 people at the finish, but they've been running for 20 to 42 editions, carried by clubs and local communities. That's exactly what makes them special. In 2026, four of them and the shortest trail of the Masters made up the Schwarzwald-Berglauf-Pokal (Black Forest mountain race cup), a series you can run across the whole season.

The series opens with the Kandelberglauf (Kandel mountain race) in Waldkirch, around 14 km north of Freiburg. From the market square at 265 metres, you run up the closed Kandel road to the Kandel pass at 1,205 metres: 12.2 km, 940 m of climbing, all on asphalt. The 42nd edition took place on 2 May 2026 with 240 people at the finish, and the entry fee includes the bus ride back down from the Kandel (kandelberglauf.de).

Closest to the city is the Rosskopflauf in Heuweiler, around 7 km away. The 18.4 km loop with around 560 m of climbing leads via the Wildtalereck to the Friedrichturm on the Roßkopf, about half of it on forest paths. Shorter options are the 10 km Wildtalereck-Run and the children's and youth races. On 12 July 2026, at the 21st edition, 233 people finished the long course (rosskopflauf.de).

Two weeks later, the Tote-Mann-Berglauf leads from Oberried in the Dreisamtal, around 10 km from Freiburg, on forest roads and trails up to the Toter Mann in the Feldberg area: 11.1 km and 750 m of climbing. It's organized by Freiburg's PTSV Jahn together with the municipality of Oberried, and the 39th edition on 25 July 2026 had 205 people at the finish (ptsv-jahn-freiburg.de).

At the Belchen-Berglauf in Schönau im Schwarzwald, around 23 km to the south, 11.4 km and 824 m of climbing lead from the church and town hall up to the Hotel Belchen at 1,362 metres, and you get back down by cable car and bus. The 20th edition on 19 September 2026 had 174 people at the start (belchenberglauf.tus-schoenau.de).

The finale is the 14 km Bodenhäusle Trail with 610 m of climbing at the Black Forest Trailrun Masters in Elzach, around 26 km from Freiburg. On 3 and 4 October 2026, the town of Elzach hosts a whole trail weekend, up to a stage race with 55.8 km and 2,720 m of climbing on Saturday and 37 km on Sunday. In 2025, 449 people reached the finish (trailrun-masters.de).

Not a mountain race, but a classic of the region, is the Schwarzwald-Marathon in Bräunlingen near Donaueschingen, around 45 km away. It has existed since 1968, according to the organizer it's the oldest nature and women's marathon in the world, and it always takes place on the second weekend of October – in 2026 on 10 and 11 October, with the marathon on Sunday at 9:30 am. Around 80 percent of the course is on forest paths, rising gently until about kilometre 21 and descending gently after that. There's also a half marathon, 10 km, 5 km and a relay; in 2025, 3,235 people finished across all individual races, 1,608 of them in the half marathon (schwarzwaldmarathon.de).

Nearby: IRONMAN 70.3 Switzerland

There's no IRONMAN race in Freiburg. The closest is IRONMAN 70.3 Switzerland in Rapperswil-Jona, around 113 km southeast as the crow flies. On 6 June 2027, the middle distance there covers a 1.9 km swim in the Obersee of Lake Zurich, 90 km on the bike over two laps through the hilly hinterland and 21.1 km over two run laps through Rapperswil's old town, with the finish on the Lidoplatz. Registration for 2027 was already sold out at the end of September 2026 (ironman.com).

Planning tips for your running year

Registering early pays off. At the Freiburg Trailrun both courses were sold out in 2026, and the places for IRONMAN 70.3 Switzerland 2027 are already gone. The Cross-Triathlon has only 40 individual places. At B2Run, your place depends on your employer, so ask at your company early.

What it costs. At the Mein Freiburg Marathon 2027, the marathon costs €80, the half marathon €70, the 10 km €48, the school marathon €49 and the Mini-Marathon €7. At the charity runs, your entry fee goes to the cause: at the Rainforest Run to a rainforest project, at the Charity Walk & Run in full to non-profit organizations.

Two worlds shape Freiburg's running year. In the city, the Seepark is the centre: the triathlon, the 24-hour run and the Charity Walk & Run take place there, and the marathon passes by. You'll find climbing on the Schauinsland and at the mountain races around the city; at the Kandel, the Toter Mann and the Belchen, a bus or the cable car takes you back down into the valley.

Don't train alone

Freiburg's year calls for two kinds of training. For the marathon at the beginning of April, you do the long runs in winter, and for the trail run and the mountain races you need climbing on forest paths. Both are easier in a group, and at the start it's nicer when you know someone. Freiburg has running groups (Lauftreffs) and run clubs, so you don't have to do either the long runs or the climbing alone. You'll find the right group among the running groups and run clubs in Freiburg.
