4.5 kilometres along the Förde, a start in front of the state parliament and, since 2026, two race days to choose from: how Kiel's corporate run works and how your team can plan for 2027.

At the AOK-Business.Run Kiel you choose your evening: since 2026 the corporate run has been held on two consecutive days, both starting at 6 pm in front of the state parliament (Landtag) on Düsternbrooker Weg (source: businessrun-zippels.de, start times & schedule). In 2026 that was Wednesday, 6 May, and Thursday, 7 May. On the first evening 5,000 people from 191 companies ran, with another 3,000 announced for the second (source: aok.de, press release of 6 May 2026). For 2027 the organiser's site so far only says "Coming soon: registration 2027", with no date yet (as of 3 October 2026; source: businessrun-zippels.de).
The Kiel race is one of the corporate runs the AOK health insurer supports in several cities; it is organised by ZIPPEL'S Läuferwelt (source: aok.de, press release of 6 May 2026). What the AOK runs have in common and how they differ is covered in the AOK Firmenlauf overview.
The team captain picks the race day in the registration portal, and the choice applies to the whole team. If one day is fully booked, the team has to switch to the other; in exceptional cases the organiser moves teams itself (source: businessrun-zippels.de, start times & schedule). The stated reason for the format is to spread out the course and finish area (source: ibid.).
The 2026 numbers show how popular the first evening is: Wednesday was full weeks in advance with 4,691 registrations, while Thursday still had places (source: aok.de, press release "Doppelformat sorgt für Rekordnachfrage"). A year earlier, with a single date, the race was fully booked three weeks before the start with more than 6,000 participants from 350 companies (source: aok.de, press release of 7 May 2025).
For your team: if you definitely want the first evening, register as soon as 2027 registration opens. The second evening has the advantage of a smaller field. And if you cannot get everyone together on one day: the choice applies per team, not per person (source: businessrun-zippels.de, start times & schedule). Two teams from the same company on two different evenings are one solution.
According to the organiser the loop is flat and therefore well suited to beginners (source: businessrun-zippels.de, course). From the start in front of the Landtag the route heads north along Düsternbrooker Weg, past villas and under trees, to Lindenallee as its northernmost point. There it turns onto the Kiellinie promenade and runs right along the water back south. Past the Reventlouwiese lawn it turns back onto Düsternbrooker Weg and into the Schloßgarten park, then over a small bridge back onto the Kiellinie and into the home straight in front of the Reventlouwiese (source: businessrun-zippels.de, course). The distance: 4.5 kilometres (source: aok.de, press release of 6 May 2026).
In running terms: the first half on Düsternbrooker Weg is sheltered, while the way back on the Kiellinie is exposed on the waterfront. If the wind comes from the south that evening, you run the second part into it. So save something for the Kiellinie and tuck in behind a group from your team. The short detour through the Schloßgarten is the last chance to catch your breath before the bridge and the home straight.

The team captain collects bib numbers for everyone: Monday and Tuesday from 12 noon to 6 pm at ZIPPEL'S Läuferwelt, Fleethörn 25, and on race days from 1 pm in the AOK tent on the Reventlouwiese (source: businessrun-zippels.de, entry fee & bib collection). The start follows a joint warm-up; in 2026 the AOK regional director opened the race by ringing a ship's bell (source: aok.de, press release of 6 May 2026). Every finisher receives a medal (source: aok.de, press release of 7 May 2025).
Nordic walking poles, prams, baby joggers and inline skates are not allowed on the course, and animals are prohibited except assistance dogs (source: businessrun-zippels.de, terms of participation). During the race, Düsternbrooker Weg and the Kiellinie between Schloßgarten and Parkstraße, among others, are fully closed to traffic; the Ostseekai Nord car park remains accessible (source: businessrun-zippels.de, residents' information).
A company team needs at least four people. The four fastest individual times are added together, with an overall ranking and a women's team ranking, plus a special award for the largest team (source: businessrun-zippels.de, awards & ranking). Places 1 to 6 overall, 1 to 3 among women's teams and the winner of the special award are honoured (source: ibid.). In 2025 the most original outfit was also judged (source: aok.de, press release of 7 May 2025).
Because only four times count, a large team can relax: four fast people carry the ranking, everyone else runs at their own pace. If you want to go for the "largest team" award, you mainly need numbers, so it pays to recruit early in your company.
The entry fee is tiered by number of participants: €22 up to the 1,000th entry, then €24, €26, €28 and €30 in steps of a thousand, and €32 from 5,001 entries, each plus 19% VAT (source: businessrun-zippels.de, entry fee & bib collection). In 2026 the registration deadline was 24 April or when the participant limit was reached (source: businessrun-zippels.de, transfers & registration deadline). If someone drops out, the team captain can transfer the place to a colleague in the team admin area (source: ibid.).
Companies can book extras: a 16 m² pagoda tent for €649 plus VAT, custom-printed team shirts for €39.90 to €49.90 from the ZIPPEL'S store at Rathausstraße 2, and catering vouchers worth one euro each (source: businessrun-zippels.de, team tents & equipment, T-shirts, catering & vouchers).
The Business.Run is one of the first corporate runs of the season. The AOK describes it as a chance "to get started with running" (source: aok.de, press release of 6 May 2026). That also means preparation falls in the weeks when it is still dark and windy in Kiel after work.
Count back: for people who do not run yet, 4.5 kilometres in early May is very doable in about ten weeks. That puts the start at the end of February. Begin with three sessions a week of 20 to 30 minutes alternating running and walking, and extend the running parts a little each week. From mid-April you can run the full distance once a week without stopping. Because training starts in winter, a fixed appointment helps more than any plan: once a week straight after work with colleagues, ideally on the lit Kiellinie where you will race later. If you also want to train with others, you will find Lauftreffs (group runs) and run clubs under running in Kiel.
The season continues after the Business.Run in May: all races in the city are listed in the annual overview of running events in Kiel, and we cover the Kiel.Lauf on its own page. For another large corporate run in the north, see our page on the B2Run Hamburg.
