E.ON Firmenlauf Essen 2027: 5 km through Rüttenscheid to the Grugapark

The 17th E.ON Firmenlauf Essen (Essen corporate run) takes place on Wednesday, 9 June 2027, a good three weeks earlier in the year than in 2026 (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, home page). The last edition on 1 July 2026 set a participation record: 16,000 people from 616 companies, and every place was taken (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, home page and registration). According to the organiser, registration for 2027 opens in early 2027 (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, registration). This guide explains how the evening works, what the 5 km through Rüttenscheid are like, and how you can take part without a company team.

What is confirmed for 2027 and what we know from 2026

So far the organiser has confirmed three things for 2027: the date, that it is the 17th edition, and that the adjusted course through the Grugapark introduced in 2026 stays. Team tents and table reservations will again be open to all companies (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, home page). Everything else in the table comes from the 2026 race information and is a guide only.

Five kilometres, four cheering stations

The start is in front of the Philharmonie on Huyssenallee. The course then runs along Rüttenscheider Straße, the neighbourhood's main street, and across Grugaplatz into the Grugapark, with the finish on the Tummelwiese lawn (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, race information). The first half is city street lined with bars and shops, the second half is park.

In 2026 the organiser marked the loud spots itself: a local school cheered at every kilometre sign. At km 1 it was the Maria-Wächtler-Gymnasium at the Rüttenscheider Stern junction, at km 2 the Gesamtschule Holsterhausen under the bridge just before the Grugahalle arena, at km 3 the B.M.V.-Gymnasium in front of the Orangerie in the Grugapark, and at km 4 the Goetheschule on the home straight after the team area (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, home page). In the end all four schools received €500 each. Laufsport bunert also sets up a water station on the course, and there are drinks at the finish (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, race information).

What that means for your race: on Rüttenscheider Straße you are inside a wave of thousands, so use the first kilometre to settle in rather than chase a time. If you do want to run fast, know one rule: rankings use gun time, measured from your wave's start signal rather than from when you cross the line (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, race information). The organiser therefore asks fast runners to start in wave 1. In 2026, men under 20 minutes and women under 22 minutes could start in wave 1 with a sticker that the team captain collects at bib pick-up. For everyone else, the time limit is one hour, which works out at 12 minutes per kilometre. A brisk walk is enough.

No company team? Join the bunert Essen Team

Entries normally go through a team captain who registers all colleagues together. The organiser says individual entries are not possible for organisational reasons (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, race information). There is one route for anyone who does not work in Essen or whose employer is not taking part: register as an individual in the "bunert Essen Team", team shirt included. In 2026 this team started in the third wave at 7:15 pm (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, home page and race information).

This also helps running groups whose members work in small offices. A company needs at least three people to enter the team ranking (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, race information), so three colleagues from a small business are already in.

After-work logistics: from the office to the Philharmonie

A corporate run on a Wednesday evening is mostly a question of getting there. The good news from the 2026 information: your bib worked as a ticket for all buses and trams in Essen for the whole day (fare zone A) (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, race information). To the start, take the U11 or lines 107 and 108 to "Philharmonie"; from the main station it is about a five-minute walk. From the finish, the U11 or bus 142 leave from "Messe West/Süd/Gruga".

If you drive, park at trade fair car park P9 (free from 3 pm in 2026) and take the U11 to the start. There is hardly any parking near the start itself. Bags (not loose items) can be left at the Grugabad, in 2026 between 4:30 and 9 pm. Changing rooms and showers there are limited (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, race information), so it is easier to leave the office already in running kit.

One more detail for team captains: the start wave is chosen at registration and cannot be changed later, and each wave has a limited quota (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, race information). In 2026 the second wave was already full while the third still had places (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, registration). A fourth wave at 7:45 pm was dropped in 2026 because the police required a new traffic plan (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, home page).

After the finish: team area, awards, charity

From 7 pm the after-run party takes place on the Tummelwiese, with free entry for family and fans too. In 2026 the award ceremony was around 8:45 pm and the evening ended around 10 pm (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, race information). Awards go to the three fastest men and women, the three fastest men's and women's teams (the times of a company's three fastest runners are added up) and the company with the most participants.

Since 2026 every company can book its own team area. The tents stand on the Ballspielwiese lawn between the roller rink and the model gardens, about 150 metres from the finish lawn, and every runner passes by on the way to the finish (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, team area). In 2026 a 6 × 3 m tent cost €1,290 plus VAT and a 3 × 3 m tent €990; the €120 table reservations were fully booked. Without a tent you can still cheer there: the organiser describes the Ballspielwiese as the big cheering zone just before the finish.

The 2026 charity partner was the Essen association Be Strong For Kids, which supports disadvantaged, ill and disabled children and young people in the Ruhr area (source: essener-firmenlauf.de, charity).

From April to June: 5 km with your colleagues

9 June 2027 is a Wednesday, so the training fits into the evenings before. Count backwards: if you hardly run at the moment, about ten weeks with three short sessions a week will get you to 5 km without stopping, which means starting in early April. Fixed dates work best: one run a week together after work, the others on your own. Essen has Lauftreffs (group runs) and run clubs with weekly sessions that welcome beginners; see Running in Essen. For a test race in spring, pick one from the running events in Essen.

Essen is not the only corporate run in the Ruhr area. The AOK-Firmenlauf Bochum belongs to a different series with its own organiser; the AOK-Firmenlauf overview explains that series. If you want to run through a football stadium, the B2Run Dortmund course covers about 5.9 km through the Signal Iduna Park and finishes in the Westfalenpark (source: b2run.de, Dortmund). All B2Run locations are in our B2Run 2027 overview.
