Hermannslauf 2027: 31.1 km from Detmold to Bielefeld

The 55th Hermannslauf takes place on Sunday, 25 April 2027 (source: hermannslauf.de). It does not start in Bielefeld: the start is at the Hermannsdenkmal (Hermann Monument) on the Grotenburg hill near Detmold. From there the course runs 31.1 km along the ridge of the Teutoburg Forest to the Sparrenburg promenade in Bielefeld (source: hermannslauf.de, 2026 race information). The hardest part may be getting in at all: in 2026 the run, the hike and the Mini-Hermann sold out in a little over 35 minutes (source: hermannslauf.de, news of 20 January 2026).

Detmold, not Bielefeld: getting to the start

The Hermannslauf is a point-to-point race, so the morning logistics need planning. You cannot drive to the start; access roads to the monument are closed (source: hermannslauf.de, FAQ). There are two options:

The Bielefeld option means you park or stay near the finish and need no return trip afterwards. The organiser lists the Bahnhofsviertel 1 and Am Hauptbahnhof car parks (source: hermannslauf.de, FAQ). In 2026 the registration confirmation worked as a free ticket on buses and trains in the TeutoOWL fare zone on Saturday and Sunday, covering Bielefeld and the districts of Gütersloh, Herford, Minden-Lübbecke and Lippe (source: hermannslauf.de, "Alle Infos zum Hermannslauf", April 2026). Whether that applies again in 2027 is not yet confirmed.

At the start there is one hard deadline: drop your kit bag between 7:30 and 10:30 on the meadow at the Bismarckstein, at the trucks of the THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief); you collect it at the finish below the Sparrenburg (source: 2026 race information). If you arrive early by shuttle, you may wait up to two hours for your wave. Warm throwaway layers are worth it on an April morning in the woods. The monument itself only opens at noon on race day (source: hermannslauf.de, FAQ).

In 2026, bibs were handed out on Saturday from 12:00 to 17:00 at the Lenkwerk in Bielefeld (Am Stadtholz 24–26) and on Sunday morning from 6:20 at the Stadtwerke; there was no pick-up in Detmold. New in 2026 was postal delivery for €8, bookable only when registering (source: hermannslauf.de, FAQ; 2026 race information).

The course: 774 metres down, 568 up

The monument stands at 371 m, the Sparrenburg at 165 m (source: 2026 race information, elevation profile). Overall the route goes downhill, but not evenly: over 31.1 km you climb about 568 m and descend about 774 m (source: 2026 race information). The organiser describes the appeal as the changing surfaces – forest and sandy paths, asphalt, cobblestones and steps – and says the course demands good fitness and concentration (source: 2026 race information). The organiser's split table lists the key points in order:

km Point What to expect
5.2 Querstraße before the Ehberg 1st aid station (water only)
7.0 Ehberg (top) first big climb done
8.3–12.0 Panzerstraße, military training area 2nd aid station at km 8.3
13.5 Stapelager Schlucht (gorge) 3rd aid station with fruit
14.8–16.5 Tönsberg, bottom to shelter climb
18.4 Oerlinghausen 4th aid station, through town
19.6 Schopketal (valley)
23.1 Lämershagen steps steps after the motorway bridge
24.9–26.2 Eiserner Anton radio tower and inn 5th aid station, cola too
28.5 Habichtshöhe
29.9 Promenade (start) last 1.2 km to the Sparrenburg

Spectator hotspots are the Panzerstraße on the Senne military training area, the Tönsberg, the centre of Oerlinghausen, the Lämershagen steps and the Eiserner Anton (source: de.wikipedia.org, Hermannslauf). Oerlinghausen even explains the odd distance: until 2004 the course was 30.6 km, then it was extended by 500 m because of the crowds in town (source: de.wikipedia.org).

For pacing, your kilometre splits will swing with the terrain, so a watch set to a fixed pace is of little use. The organiser explicitly recommends using its split table so you don't start too fast and run into "oxygen debt" (source: 2026 race information). An extract:

Finish time Stapelager Schlucht (km 13.5) Oerlinghausen (km 18.4) Eiserner Anton (km 26.2)
2:40 h 1:09 1:35 2:15
3:00 h 1:18 1:46 2:32
3:30 h 1:31 2:04 2:57

Source: 2026 race information, split times.

The cut-offs are enforced: in 2026, runners who missed certain points could be taken out, e.g. the Stapelager Schlucht at 13:45, Oerlinghausen at 14:30 and the Eiserner Anton at 15:45 (source: 2026 race information). Headphones, dogs and running buggies are not allowed (source: hermannslauf.de, FAQ).

Training: the downhills are the real test

The 774 m of descent is what many runners underestimate. Uphill your lungs slow you down; downhill your quads and knees take the load, on every step over roots, sand or cobbles. That gives three training priorities:

Having the Teutoburg Forest on your doorstep helps. One request from the organiser applies to training too: much of the 31.1 km crosses private land, so stay on the paths (source: 2026 race information). In 2026 the organising club TSVE 1890 Bielefeld offered free preparation runs every Saturday at 14:00 from 17 January, meeting at the Universitätsstraße car park at Bielefeld University. Long, easy runs in groups from sub-2:40 to "just finish". Requirement: being able to run 90 minutes non-stop in hilly terrain (source: 2026 race information). According to the race information, LG Oerlinghausen also runs Hermannslauf training. Dates for 2027 have not been published yet.

Counting back from 25 April

From early October the start is a little over 29 weeks away. The twist: the first deadline is not in April but in January, when the places are allocated.

Running it with your group

The Hermannslauf works well for groups. Runners and Mini-Hermann kids can be entered in bulk via an Excel list; hikers can be registered together but entered one by one (source: hermannslauf.de, FAQ). For a race that sells out in half an hour, it pays to have one person enter the whole group.

There is no relay. There is a team and company ranking: five participants from the same club or company are scored automatically as a team, as long as they spell the name identically (source: 2026 race information). Group members who don't want to run 31 km can enter the hike/walk category: start at 8:00, time limit 8 hours 30 minutes; running is not allowed and is checked (source: 2026 race information). That way everyone arrives at the Sparrenburg on the same day.

Group runs and run clubs for your winter long runs on the Teuto are listed under running in Bielefeld. All other races in the city, including shorter spring tune-ups, are in our overview of Bielefeld running events. If you want to keep running with colleagues in summer, see the AOK Firmenlauf Bielefeld (corporate run).

Why the Hermann is so sought after

The race was founded by Wolfgang Schlüter and Peter Gehrmann and first held in 1971 (source: de.wikipedia.org; 2026 race information). In the early years the Bielefeld ski club organised it; today it is TSVE 1890 Bielefeld (source: de.wikipedia.org). In the race information, the patron calls it the largest running event in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region and thanks more than 800 volunteers (source: 2026 race information).

January shows the demand: in 2026 every place was gone after a little over 35 minutes, faster than ever before, with server traffic many times higher than the year before (source: hermannslauf.de, news of 20 January 2026). On race day, tens of thousands of spectators cheered on around 8,500 participants in spring weather (source: radiobielefeld.de, 26 April 2026).

In 2026, defending champion Florian Bochert won in 1:43:38 ahead of record winner Elias Sansar; Franziska Bossow won the women's race for the third time (source: radiobielefeld.de), in 2:06:27 (source: de.wikipedia.org, list of winners). The course records belong to Ezekiel Jafari Ngimba with 1:40:58 (2011) and Stevie Kremer with 1:58:58 (2013) (source: de.wikipedia.org).

In this part of Westphalia, the Hermann is the date people plan their running year around. If you prefer a spring marathon on asphalt, the Rhein-Ruhr-Marathon in Duisburg follows a week later, with more dates in the 2027 marathon calendar. For scenery and climbing, look at the Allgäu Panorama Marathon in August.

After the finish

Everyone who finishes within the time limit receives a medal (source: 2026 race information). Showers are below the Sparrenburg and at the ZAR in Bethel, plus free massages from the physiotherapy school of the Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel (source: 2026 race information). There is no parking at the Sparrenburg; roads are closed over a wide area, and spectators walk about 10 to 15 minutes from the old-town car parks to the promenade (source: hermannslauf.de, FAQ). In 2026 results were online by 18:00 at the latest on the Neue Westfälische website, with certificate and finish video (source: 2026 race information).
