12.3 kilometres, twice over the Köhlbrand Bridge, and a race place that is handed out in December: how to get to the start in 2027 and how to pace the climbs.

Once a year, the Köhlbrand Bridge belongs to people in running shoes instead of lorries. The Köhlbrandbrückenlauf (Köhlbrand Bridge Run) on 3 October covers 12.3 kilometres from the cruise terminal grounds at Windhukkai over Hamburg's harbour landmark and back (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, participant info). The 2026 edition has been run; the 2027 date is still to be announced. If you want to be there next year, remember one thing above all: registration opens in December. In recent years this event has not been decided on the course but at the keyboard.
The Köhlbrand Bridge is normally closed to pedestrians. According to the organiser it opens for sport only twice a year: for the bridge run in October and for the ADAC Cyclassics bike race in August. Spectators are not allowed on the bridge even then, so if you want to stand up there, you have to start (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, "Was ihr über die Köhlbrandbrücke wissen solltet"). The organiser calls it "Germany's largest bridge run" (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, homepage).
The bridge in numbers: 3,618 metres long, the roadway is 53 metres high at its highest point, and around 32,000 vehicles cross it every day. Because you run it out and back, more than seven of the 12.3 kilometres are on the bridge (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, bridge article).
There is also a reason not to put this off forever: the bridge is due to be replaced. In March 2024 Hamburg's Senate agreed on a new bridge roughly 20 metres higher. Under the city timeline cited there, planning approval is due to start in 2030, the new bridge is to open to traffic in 2042 and the old one is to be demolished by 2046 (source: de.wikipedia.org, Köhlbrandbrücke). So the old bridge will be around for some years yet. Whether and how the run will move to a new bridge has not been communicated by the organiser.
The 2026 edition shows how quickly it goes. Registration opened on 3 December 2025 (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, participant info, entry fees). Less than a week later the 12 noon start was sold out (news of 8 December 2025), on 19 December the 9 am start followed, and on 8 January 2026 the organiser announced that all three waves were full, almost nine months before race day (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, news). In 2023, all 7,500 places had already sold out (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, 2023 review).
What that means for 2027:
Entry fees in 2026 rose in three steps: €29 until 3 March, €33 until 3 June, €37 until 21 September; children and teenagers up to 16 paid €17, €20 or €23 (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, participant info). Prices for 2027 have not been published. Since everything was gone in January 2026, the top price tier hardly mattered.
The course is officially measured. From Windhukkai it runs over Veddeler Damm, Ellerholzbrücke and Roßdamm, switches onto the carriageway near Breslauer Straße and climbs onto the bridge. The turnaround is at the Finkenwerderstraße junction; you then return on the other carriageway the same way to the finish at the terminal (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, participant info).
What that means for pacing:
You won't repeat a flat-course time here. The fastest winner mentioned in the organiser's race reports ran 39:03 in 2019, a new course record at the time (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, 2019 review). Whether that record has fallen since is not clear from the organiser's pages. For everyone else, the view over the harbour, the container terminals and the Elbe is the real reason to do this event.
You don't need to become a mountain runner for a 53-metre bridge. Two things help in the weeks before: once a week a run with repeated longer climbs (car park ramps, dyke ramps, bridges), and one long run that goes a little beyond 12 kilometres. If you'd like company for that, you'll find regular group runs under Running in Hamburg.
The bridge run is easy for groups. The three fastest runners of a club, company team or similar group are automatically entered into the team ranking, separately for women's and men's teams. No separate team registration is needed; all that matters is that everyone enters the team name identically (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, participant info). A typo in the team name costs you the ranking, so agree on the spelling first.
The organiser explicitly advises against coming by car because there is hardly any parking. The recommended route is the S-Bahn (suburban train) to Veddel, exit Wilhelmsburger Platz/Hafen, then around 1.2 kilometres on foot following the signs. By bike or on foot you can also come through the Old Elbe Tunnel; there is bike parking next to bib pick-up (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, participant info). In 2026 spectators were allowed on the event grounds, with music, a host and food stands (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, participant info). They are not allowed on the bridge.
In 2026, bibs were collected on two days beforehand in the city centre and on race day from 7 am opposite the grounds, in each case only with your registration confirmation and ID; bibs were not posted (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, participant info). Anyone aged 10 or older could take part (source: ibid.).

The bridge run is one of several events by the same organiser, Marathon Hamburg Veranstaltungs GmbH. Looking for a bigger goal after the bridge? The Haspa Marathon Hamburg takes place on 25 April 2027 (source: koehlbrandbrueckenlauf.de, event calendar), and in September 2027 the PSD Bank Halbmarathon Hamburg runs through Wandsbek. If you like bridges, Cologne has a counterpart on the Rhine with the ASV Köln Brückenlauf. All of the city's races through the year are listed under running events in Hamburg.
