Metropolmarathon Nuremberg/Fürth 2027: date, course, registration

The Sparkassen Metropolmarathon links two cities: Nuremberg and Fürth. The marathon, half marathon and 10 km race are scheduled for Sunday, 20 June 2027, and registration for them is already open (source: my.raceresult.com, Metropolmarathon 2027 registration). Imperial Castle, cloverleaf and a changing direction

What makes the Metropolmarathon special is that it doesn't loop – it runs from one city to the other, and the direction changes. In 2025 all Sunday races ran from Nuremberg to Fürth, from the Hauptmarkt square to the Fürther Freiheit, under exactly the motto now used for 2027: "Von der Kaiserburg zum Kleeblatt" (source: fuerth.sparkasseblog.de, May 2025). In 2026 it ran the other way under the motto "Kleeblatt trifft Kaiserburg": start in Fürth at the Julius-Hirsch-Sportzentrum, finish on Nuremberg's Hauptmarkt (source: tourismus-fuerth.de; metropolmarathon.de, marathon).

So the 2027 motto points to a start in Nuremberg and a finish in Fürth again. The organiser has not yet published a course description for 2027, though. Don't build your travel plans on the direction until it's official on metropolmarathon.de.

As for the course itself: in 2026 the organiser described the marathon route as mostly flat with gentle climbs, with tarmac and natural-surface sections, 18 aid stations and cheering points along the way (source: metropolmarathon.de, marathon). The organiser does not place personal drinks bottles on the course (source: metropolmarathon.de, FAQ). If you train with a particular gel or drink, you'll have to carry it.

Point to point means sorting out logistics early

Running from city to city is lovely, but it takes more planning than a loop. Here's how it worked in 2026 (source: metropolmarathon.de, marathon):

For you that means: work out the day before how you'll get to the start on Sunday morning and count backwards. A 7:45 am start with a bus or train journey means a very early alarm. And if friends or family are coming to cheer, plan a spot for them in the second half and a meeting point at the finish – start and finish are in different cities.

A June marathon: train in spring, race in the warmth

20 June is one day before the summer solstice. Count back from race day and your build-up looks like this:

The real challenge is the jump in temperature. You train at 10 degrees and may race in summer warmth. The early start helps, but for the final kilometres in the late morning it's worth putting a few long runs in May into the warmer part of the day and practising drinking on the move. A six-hour limit leaves room for walking breaks at the aid stations (source: metropolmarathon.de, FAQ).

Marathon pacers cover finish times from 3:00 to 5:00 hours in 15-minute steps; in the half marathon from 1:30 to 2:30 hours (source: metropolmarathon.de, FAQ). The half marathon limit is three hours and the 10K Run limit 2:15 hours (source: metropolmarathon.de, FAQ). For other marathons in spring and early summer 2027, see the 2027 marathon calendar.

With your running group: 10K teams and group discounts

Running groups have two handy options. The 10K Run has a team ranking for teams of four in women's, men's and mixed categories (at least half women). Just enter your team name when you register (source: metropolmarathon.de, FAQ). And bigger groups save money: 10% off from 10 people, 15% from 25 and 20% from 50. You fill in a spreadsheet and send it to the timing company (source: metropolmarathon.de, FAQ).

That way one group can cover very different goals: some on the marathon, some on the half, newcomers on the 10 km as a team. You'll find Lauftreffs (group runs) and run clubs for spring training on Running in Nuremberg. If you want to keep racing with colleagues in summer, the B2Run Nuremberg is a corporate run in the city, and for anyone with triathlon ambitions, Challenge Roth is just down the road.

The Metropolmarathon sees itself as an inclusive event: people with disabilities get 20% off, and a required companion runs for free (source: metropolmarathon.de, FAQ).

Saturday: the KIDSmarathon in Fürth

Saturday belongs to the children. In 2026, 4,000 kids ran the Pillenstein KIDSmarathon around the Julius-Hirsch-Sportzentrum in Fürth (source: bayerischelaufzeitung.de, 2026 recap). Children aged 1 to 11 could take part, untimed. The 200, 400 and 800 m courses are step-free, and aids such as wheelchairs or walkers are welcome (source: metropolmarathon.de, KIDSmarathon). Information and registration for 2027 open on 1 January (source: metropolmarathon.de, home page). Which other events fall on the Saturday in 2027 has not been published yet.

Looking back at 2026: bigger than ever

According to the cities of Fürth and Nuremberg, the 2026 edition drew 11,500 runners in perfect running weather – a new record. On Sunday, 14 June 2026, the marathon, half marathon, AEG 10K Run, Nordic walking, youth race and a 4.2 km run went from the Julius-Hirsch-Sportzentrum to Nuremberg's Hauptmarkt (source: bayerischelaufzeitung.de, 2026 recap). The fastest woman in the half marathon was Stefanie Hansen in 1:18:39 (source: marktspiegel.de, 2026 recap). Around 600 volunteers help over the weekend, and the event is run by two clubs, Laufteam Fürth 2010 and Team Klinikum Nürnberg (source: metropolmarathon.de, home page).
