Almost 20,000 people, 561 teams, no timing: Hamburg's HafenCity Run is a corporate and charity event in one. What team leaders and solo runners need to know for 2027.

The HafenCity Run is an event where nobody runs for time, and yet almost 20,000 people show up: companies, clubs, families and groups of friends start as teams, each one introduced by the announcers, on a loop of about 4.4 kilometres through Hamburg's newest district (source: hafencityrun.de, Laufstrecke). The next edition has been announced for 2027. The countdown on the organiser's homepage runs to Saturday, 29 May 2027, 9 am; entry terms with prices and deadlines for 2027 have not been published yet (source: hafencityrun.de, homepage; as of 3 October 2026).

People hearing about the HafenCity Run for the first time usually ask about finishing times. There are none. The organiser deliberately skips timing and results and describes the event as a corporate and charity run "without performance pressure and timing" (source: hafencityrun.de, Kompakt). Each team is introduced by the announcers and then sets off together, everyone at their own pace. Team starts are at least 30 seconds apart; the first start in 2026 was at 9 am (source: hafencityrun.de, Kompakt). A team does not have to finish together (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ).
Running, walking and Nordic walking are all allowed. Wheelchair users can take part with a companion; the organiser points out that surfaces, building sites and high kerbs mean the route is not fully barrier-free, and it has bought mobile ramps for such spots (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ). Children up to their tenth birthday run free within a team without a bib, prams and running buggies are allowed, and dogs can join on a lead (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ).
According to the organiser, no route since the first edition in 2002 has repeated the previous year's. The focus is on places that are new or about to be completed (source: hafencityrun.de, Laufstrecke). In 2026 the roughly 4.4-kilometre course started for the first time on the Kirchenpauerkai promenade right on the Elbe, passed Amerigo-Vespucci-Platz and ran along the Baakenhafen. A turning point south of the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier mall was announced as a spectator spot. After detours into Magdeburger Hafen and Brooktorhafen, the route turned into the home straight at Lohsepark (source: hafencityrun.de, Laufstrecke).
What this means for 2027: don't plan around the 2026 route. The course map is only published shortly before the event (in 2026 it was dated 8 May), and according to the FAQ the length can vary by 10 to 15 percent either way (source: hafencityrun.de, Laufstrecke and FAQ). There is usually no aid station on the course; drinks and a snack wait at the finish, along with the finisher shirt in exchange for your bib (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ).
No prices for 2027 have been published. For orientation, here is the 2026 scale, per bib including the donation (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ):
| Team size | until 15 January 2026 | from 16 January 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| from 10 bibs | €29 | €34 |
| from 25 | €28 | €33 |
| from 50 | €27 | €32 |
| from 100 | €26 | €31 |
| from 250 | €25 | €30 |
| from 500 | €24 | €29 |
Companies entitled to deduct input tax pay VAT on top. The fee covers the team bib, team and start photos, the announced start, finish refreshments, a finisher shirt for everyone, a cap for the team leader, a team certificate as PDF and a public transport ticket: on event day the bib is valid for one trip to the venue and back within hvv (Hamburg public transport) zones A to F (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ). Bibs added later are charged at second-period prices, but the price tier is based on the team's total number of bibs. Reducing the number after entry is not possible, and there is no refund if you don't start (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ).
Every entry fee includes a €6 donation per bib and €10 per team for the long-standing charity partner Hamburger Abendblatt hilft e.V., the charity of Hamburg's daily newspaper (source: hafencityrun.de, Kompakt). In 2025 this added up to €120,124, in 2024 to €90,785, and since the start the total has reached around €2.1 million (source: hafencityrun.de, Der gute Zweck). Since 2022 the money has mainly gone to children's and youth projects in neighbouring districts along the Elbe such as Veddel, Rothenburgsort and Wilhelmsburg (source: hafencityrun.de, Der gute Zweck). For 2026 the organiser reports around €120,000 (source: hafencityrun.de, 2026 review). The charity issues a donation receipt on request, but only for a whole team, not for individual runners (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ).
The event used to be called HSH Nordbank Run and Hamburg Commercial Bank Run (source: hafencityrun.de, press release 2022). The organiser's history shows how hard the pandemic hit it (source: hafencityrun.de, Historie):
| Year | Teams | Participants | Donations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2017 | 831 | 24,218 registered | €155,000 |
| 2019 | 640 | 18,226 | – |
| 2021 | virtual, 16–31 October | – | €3,027 |
| 2022 | over 320 | almost 9,000 | €51,195 |
| 2023 | 424 | more than 14,200 | over €78,000 |
| 2025 | 584 | around 20,000 | €120,124 |
| 2026 | 561 | almost 20,000 | around €120,000 |
In 2025 team sizes ranged from 10 to 1,300 people (source: hafencityrun.de, Historie). That range is the interesting part: small teams line up next to large corporations.
The event stands or falls with the person organising the team. They register, hand out bibs, order shirts and set the meeting point; the organiser needs no data from individual participants (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ and Kompakt). The 2027 dates are not set yet, but the 2026 calendar shows when things get tight:
When registering, the team leader picks a preferred start window. The organiser may shift it by up to 30 minutes, and exact start times are sent after the entry deadline (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ). For the announcement there is a team profile of no more than 255 characters in bullet points, because each team only gets about 30 seconds on the mic (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ). If you want a fixed base, you can book a team tent at the event hub; in 2026 the package cost €2,680 plus VAT (source: hafencityrun.de, Kompakt).
No team of ten? Individuals and smaller groups can join the Team Hamburg.Gemeinsam! ("Hamburg Together"). In 2026 solo bibs cost €29 including the €6 donation, sold until 29 May at the Hamburger Abendblatt office on Großer Burstah, and the team started at 12:30 pm (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ).
For a running group, the HafenCity Run is more of a morning out together than a race. Ten people are enough for your own team, and with your own start, team photo and shirt it becomes an outing where newcomers who don't feel ready for a race can join in too. If you are looking for people to build such a team in Hamburg, you will find Lauftreffs (group runs) and run clubs under Running in Hamburg. If you are training for a longer distance in spring anyway, the Hamburg Marathon in April is the timed counterpart.
There is practically no parking, and roads in HafenCity are closed. The organiser strongly recommends public transport: U1 to Meßberg, U3 to Baumwall, U4 to HafenCity Universität, S3 and S5 to Elbbrücken. The closest station to the start area is HafenCity Universität on the U4; from there you cross the Baakenhafen bridge to the Cruise Center Baakenhöft (source: hafencityrun.de, Anfahrt). Changing rooms and bag drop were planned at the Baakenhöft in 2026, there are no showers, so it's best to arrive ready to run (source: hafencityrun.de, FAQ).
The HafenCity Run is not Hamburg's only team event. B2Run Hamburg belongs to a nationwide corporate run series with team rankings based on times, and SportScheck RUN Hamburg to the SportScheck RUN series. The HafenCity Run stands apart with no timing, a new route every year and a fixed donation share. You will find all of the city's dates at a glance under running events in Hamburg.
