The 15th Schwebebahn-Lauf (named after Wuppertal's famous suspended railway) takes place on Sunday, 13 June 2027, with start and finish on Friedrich-Engels-Allee at the Zur Dörner Brücke bridge (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, Schwebebahn-Lauf). Registration is due to open in the fourth quarter of 2026. In 2026 the organiser counted more than 8,500 entries and says there is room for about 10,000 participants (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, home page and FAQ). What makes it special is not only the name: the race is run on the closed B7, a wide city road that is almost entirely straight, with turnaround points at both ends. Understand that and you will race it better.
The programme fills the whole Sunday. The longer distances run in the morning, the children at midday and the big 5 km field, which also carries the company and team ranking, in the afternoon (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, Schwebebahn-Lauf).

The organiser calls the race the classic "along the Schwebebahn" (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, home page). It is run on Friedrich-Engels-Allee, which is fully closed between Alter Markt and the Subway restaurant from around 11:30 pm on Saturday until around 10 pm on Sunday (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, FAQ). The 2026 course map shows the layout: start and finish at the Dörner Brücke on the Barmen side, past the opera house, the Engelsgarten park and police headquarters to the western turnaround at Subway just before Elberfeld, and back again. The road runs parallel to the river Wupper (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, course map 2026).
The distances are built from repeats of this axis. According to the 2026 map, the 5 km field runs once to the Subway turnaround and back, the 10 km twice and the half marathon four times, each with an extra turn on the Barmen side (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, course map 2026). For your race plan that means:
Drinks stations are at the two turnarounds, near Subway and near the opera house. The half marathon and 10 km use both, the 5 km only the one at Subway. At the finish there is food and drink from akzenta, Haaner Felsenquelle and Erdinger Alkoholfrei (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, FAQ). Timing is net because start and finish are in the same place; a transponder on the bib records your time, and you can pull up your result via the QR code on the bib (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, Schwebebahn-Lauf).
The 5 km field does not start all at once but in blocks with fixed times that you book when you register. Lining up begins at 1:45 pm, block Blue with hand-bikers and wheelchair users starts at 2 pm, block Green for anyone aiming for under 20 minutes at 2:10 pm. Then come the booked blocks up to the last regular block 12 at 3:20 pm, and finally the family block at 3:25 pm (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, FAQ). The registration system holds up to 20 start blocks that are opened one by one.
Your bib can show up to three times: entry to the start area, entry to your block's waiting zone, and your actual start time. Access is from the Engelsgarten across the opera car park to Wittensteinstraße, then via Winklerstraße and Stresemannstraße (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, FAQ). If you miss your block you may start in a later one, never an earlier one.
In the family block, parents run with children born 2019 or earlier, with their own team name even without a company and, if they wish, a double ranking for their company team. Pushchairs are only allowed in this block of the 5 km, and dogs not at all (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, FAQ).
The company and team ranking counts the three fastest finishers of a team, and only finishers count, not everyone registered (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, Schwebebahn-Lauf). Additional members join by registering themselves and spelling the team or company name exactly the same way (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, FAQ).
The schedule suits mixed running groups: half marathon and 10 km runners go in the morning, and the half marathon time limit ends at 12:15 pm. Those who prefer 5 km start from 2 pm. Whoever runs in the morning can cheer in the afternoon and the other way round. According to the organiser, the B7 and the area around the opera offer plenty of good spectator spots (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, FAQ). The Engelsgarten hosts a tent village with companies and partners, where teams can also book their own tent. For training beforehand, see Running in Wuppertal for Lauftreffs (group runs) and run clubs with weekly sessions. More races in the city are listed under running events in Wuppertal.
The organiser staggers 2027 registration by deadline (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, FAQ):
Entries cannot be cancelled. Company entries can be transferred to another person, and you can switch to another race via the change link, paying the difference if the fee is higher (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, FAQ). Registration is online, payment by direct debit.
Unlike many city races, no VRR public transport ticket is included in the entry. The organiser explains that it would have to pay for every finisher even though many already have school or company passes (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, FAQ). Public transport is still recommended. The opera house car park is closed from 10 to 14 June 2027. The organiser suggests park and ride at Vohwinkel and Unterbarmen stations plus the Alter Markt multi-storey car park, which opens on Sundays. There are no showers, but there are toilets, a changing tent and a bag tent (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, FAQ).
The Schwebebahn-Lauf e.V. club was founded on 12 November 2012. At the first Schwebebahn-Lauf in 2013, 4,300 people and 228 company teams ran along the B7 from Elberfeld to Unterbarmen (source: schwebebahn-lauf.de, home page). Today the race starts at the opera house and heads west. The club received Wuppertal's city marketing award for its work. In autumn it also organises the Fackel-Lauf (torch run); the 12th edition is on 7 November 2026.
The Schwebebahn-Lauf is not the only corporate run format in the region. Four days earlier, on 9 June 2027, the E.ON Firmenlauf Essen takes place as a pure after-work run on a Wednesday. In the Bergisches Land region there is also the EWR Firmenlauf Remscheid.
