5 x 5 km TEAM relay Berlin 2027: five people through the Tiergarten

Five people, one baton, one 5 km loop each through the Tiergarten: the Berliner Wasserbetriebe 5 x 5 km TEAM-Staffel (team relay) is not a corporate run in the usual sense but a summer-evening party with a changeover zone. In 2026, 6,256 teams ran over three evenings, which works out at just over 31,000 people (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, news "5x5 = 25 years"). For 2027, only "June 2027" has been announced so far; the organiser will publish the exact days and start times in time for registration (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, event info, as of 3 October 2026). Plenty of time to put your team together.

How the relay works

Each of the five team members runs exactly one 5 km loop. Teams can enter as women's, men's or mixed (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, homepage). Each person may run only once per team and may not start in several teams on the same day (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, registration). A team name is mandatory: club, company, family or fantasy name. If you enter as a company, the team must consist of permanent employees (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, registration).

Since 2026 every team gets a cardboard baton with built-in timing. Before, there was only a total time; now every runner sees their own split, while the team still gets one result (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, news on the timing baton). The baton is mandatory and your own batons are not allowed (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, event info).

What the baton does not replace is the changeover symbol (Wechselsymbol): an object that lets your next runner spot you in the crowded changeover zone. The organiser asks every team to bring one, and the best symbol wins a free entry for the following year (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, event info). A large plush flamingo on a broomstick beats any phone arrangement.

The loop: from the Reichstag to the tent alley

Start and finish are in the sculpture park south of the Federal Chancellery; the event moved there in 2009 for its tenth edition after the meadow by the Goethe monument became too small (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, news "The course 2026"). The loop in brief:

(Source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, news "The course 2026")

According to the organiser, the course lies in the northern Tiergarten and offers plenty of shade even on hot days (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, course). The last metres lead through the team tent alley where your own people are standing. For pacing: according to the organiser, the final kilometre and a half along the Spree demands focus once more (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, news "The course 2026"). If you get carried away on the wide Straße des 17. Juni at the start, this is where you pay for it.

Building your team: running group or colleagues

The beauty of the format is that pace differences barely matter. Only one person per team is ever running; the others sit on the meadow, picnic and cheer. That makes the relay a good fit for a running group where some cover 5 km in 20 minutes and others in 40, just as much as for a department where two people run regularly and three are just starting. 5 km is within reach for beginners in a few months; the organiser advises starting slowly, once a week is a good beginning, and building in rest between sessions (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, training tips).

A few decisions to make in advance:

For training beforehand, a fixed after-work run helps. Berlin's Lauftreffs (group runs) and run clubs with weekly sessions are listed under Running in Berlin; if you already run with such a group, you may well have your five people.

The evening on the meadow

The relay is also a picnic. Every team gets a snack bag in a cotton tote; on site you choose vegetarian or non-vegetarian, and the drink (red wine, white wine or apple spritzer) at registration (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, snack bag). The organiser does not provide cups or cutlery, so bring bottles and reusable cups. Your own food is welcome; tents, gazebos, beach shelters, barbecues and confetti are not (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, event FAQ and event info).

Good to know: there is no car access to the venue and no parking there. Changing tents and toilets are available, showers are not. At the finish there is water and alcohol-free beer (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, event FAQ). Each runner receives the medal when leaving the changeover zone, the anchor after the finish line; leave without it and you will not get one later (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, event info). It comes in pieces: after five consecutive participations, the five medals combine into one large medal (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, homepage).

Registration and costs

The 2027 registration window has not been published yet (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, registration, as of 3 October 2026). For orientation: in 2026 an adult team cost €155, i.e. €31 per person, and a youth team €60 (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, registration). Each team is registered separately and gets its own invoice; there are no combined invoices, but several teams can be entered from the same account (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, event FAQ). Entry fees are not refunded. The captain receives the start pass by email about seven to ten days before the event (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, event FAQ).

TEAM relay or B2Run Berlin

Berlin has several events for colleagues. At B2Run Berlin, everyone runs the whole course of about 5.7 kilometres and finishes in the Olympic Stadium; around 18,000 people took part in 2026 (source: b2run.de, Berlin). The TEAM relay splits the distance across five people and is open to friends, families and clubs, not just companies. If you want both: B2Run took place in September in 2026, the relay in June.

Looking back: 25 years and a record

The idea comes from Copenhagen: in 1999 a team from organiser SCC EVENTS visited the 5x5 km Stafetten there, and a year later 218 teams ran at the Berlin premiere (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, news "5x5 = 25 years"). The 25th edition in 2026 was also a record year, with 6,256 teams over three evenings from 2 to 4 June (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, news "5x5 = 25 years"; scc-events.com, event calendar).

On the first evening 2,075 teams were entered, with Charité hospital fielding the most at 200 teams; on the second evening 2,080 teams with 10,400 people ran (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, news "The course 2026" and "5x5 = 25 years"). On the third evening, "BMF 2 – Finanzministerium" won the women's category in 1:52:16 and "Siemens Energy Best Of" the men's in 1:30:53 (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, news "Relay day three"). Since 2003, teams from the Bethel foundation with pupils with and without disabilities have taken part (source: berliner-teamstaffel.de, news "5x5 = 25 years").

More in Berlin

All of the city's races across the year are listed under Running events in Berlin. Also in the Tiergarten and from the same organiser is the VITAMIN WELL Frauenlauf Berlin. If you want the relay format in another city, Hamburg has the RUN5 team relay.
