Frankfurt Half Marathon 2027: sold out – and how to still race

The 25th Mainova Halbmarathon Frankfurt (Frankfurt Half Marathon) takes place on Sunday, 21 March 2027, starting in front of the Deutsche Bank Park stadium and finishing inside it (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, race regulations). If you are only now thinking of signing up, you are too late for the normal route: registration opened on 28 September 2026 at 10 am, and a few days later the organiser lists the race as sold out (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, registration page). A place is still possible, just not through the front door. And once you have one, the real task is a winter of training that ends in a fast time in March.

Sold out within days: how to still get a bib

The half marathon in Frankfurt's south fills faster than many runners plan their season. For 2026, the field was gone within twelve hours of registration opening (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de). 2027 went the same way: registration opened on 28 September 2026 at 10 am, and the portal now shows "AUSGEBUCHT / Startplatzbörse aktiv" – sold out, bib exchange active (source: datasport.de, 2027 registration). The only entry still open is for the German Championships, meaning athletes entered through their club (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, registration page).

Your realistic option is the Startplatzbörse (official bib exchange). The organiser only allows transfers through this exchange. The runner handing over the place pays a €10 transfer fee and gets the rest of the entry fee back, excluding the T-shirt and any donation (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, FAQ). Transfers are possible until the end of advance registration on 31 January 2027 (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, FAQ and regulations). So check the exchange regularly through autumn and early winter – injured runners and people changing plans often release places after the first weeks of training.

The regulations do mention late entry until 14 March 2027, but only "until the field limit is reached" (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, regulations). For a sold-out race, don't count on it. Also note: if you fall ill, there is no refund and no credit (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, FAQ). The exchange is the only safety net for registered runners too.

A race with a championship field

Since 2026 the Frankfurt half has hosted the German Championships over the distance, and they return in 2027 (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, regulations). The elite field therefore starts five minutes ahead of you at 10:00, the main race follows at 10:05. The five fastest women and men in the elite race share prize money from €500 down to €100 (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, regulations).

At the championship debut on 22 March 2026, Esther Pfeiffer (Düsseldorf Athletics) won in 1:10:39, a women's course record; Richard Ringer (LC Rehlingen) won the men's race in 1:03:26 (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de). With 10,553 finishers, the 24th edition set a participation record for the third year in a row (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de). The organiser's results archive goes back to the 3rd Spiridon Frankfurt City-Halbmarathon on 6 March 2005 (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, results archive); the race is run by the club Spiridon Frankfurt.

Even if you are not chasing titles, the championship setting helps: the course is fully paved, largely flat and AIMS-measured (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, regulations), so a personal best here counts. The organiser publishes the exact route as a map and GPX download (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, course).

Pacers, aid stations, time limit

According to the FAQ, pacers cover at least these finish times: 1:24:59, 1:29:59, 1:39:59, 1:44:59, 1:49:59, 1:59:59, 2:09:59 and a sweeper at 2:44:59 (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, FAQ). The time limit is 2:45 hours, after which the finish closes (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, regulations) – that works out at just under 7:49 min/km, manageable for newcomers who can comfortably run 20 km in training.

Aid stations at km 5, 10, 16 and 19 serve water and Isofit, with organic bananas at km 10 and 16 (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, regulations). That leaves six kilometres without a station between km 10 and 16 – a good spot for a gel. According to the FAQ, the finisher medal is not automatically included: it costs €8 and is collected after the race, engraving another €10 (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, FAQ). Check what was booked when you take over a place via the exchange.

Race day logistics

Bibs are posted from 15 February 2027; if yours hasn't arrived, you can collect it on Saturday, 20 March, between 3 and 5 pm (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, regulations). Take the train: S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 and tram 21 stop at Bahnhof Stadion (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, FAQ). Parking at the Waldparkplatz or Gleisdreieck costs €10, P9 at the stadium €15, cash only; car parks open at 7:15 am (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, regulations).

A March race is decided in December

From today, 3 October, to the start there are 24 weeks – plenty for a half marathon if you spread them well. Counting back from 21 March:

The real risk of a March race isn't the distance but January: dark evenings, rain and holidays that break your rhythm. Treat your runs like appointments, pick lit routes on weekdays and move long runs to weekend daylight.

Bring your running group

The regulations include a team ranking: three runners form a team, regardless of age group (source: frankfurter-halbmarathon.de, regulations). That's a good reason to get through the winter block together. Looking for people for long Sunday runs in Frankfurt? Find the city's Lauftreffs (group runs) and run clubs under Running in Frankfurt.
