The Hannover Triathlon sold out weeks in advance in 2026 with 2,500 athletes. The 2027 date isn't set yet, and the organiser is even considering a two-day event. What to know about the lap course at the Maschsee, prices and the Bundesliga.

The Hannover Triathlon in and around the Maschsee lake held its 19th edition on Saturday, 5 September 2026 – with a record 2,500 registered athletes, and every race sold out weeks in advance (source: triathlon-hannover.de, race report of 6 September 2026). The 2027 date has not been published yet (as of 3 October 2026). Even the format is open: organiser eichels plans to "assess calmly whether to extend the event to two days next year", because it has reached its capacity in its current form (source: triathlon-hannover.de, race report of 6 September 2026).
What can already be said: this race works differently from most city triathlons. Almost everything happens on short laps around the northern shore of the Maschsee. That shapes your race, your spectators' day and the way you prepare.

Swim: Deep-water start on the west side of the northern shore. The sprint swims 500 metres in one lap, the Olympic distance two laps (source: triathlon-hannover.de, courses). Whether wetsuits are banned, allowed or compulsory is decided by the race director after a measurement one hour before the start, taken 60 centimetres deep along the course (source: triathlon-hannover.de, general info).
Bike: From transition on the northern shore you ride south along Rudolf-von-Bennigsen-Ufer to the turnaround, back to Willy-Brandt-Allee, then via Friedrichswall, Lavesallee, Am Schützenplatz and Bruchmeisterstraße to Arthur-Menge-Ufer. One lap is 7.6 kilometres: three laps for the sprint, five for the Olympic distance (source: triathlon-hannover.de, courses). There is no organiser aid on the bike course (source: triathlon-hannover.de, courses).
Run: The run course is on Rudolf-von-Bennigsen-Ufer: three laps for the sprint, five for the Olympic distance, with one aid station offering water and an isotonic drink (source: triathlon-hannover.de, courses).
The sentence to remember appears under every course description: laps are counted electronically, "but participants are themselves responsible for completing the correct distance" (source: triathlon-hannover.de, courses). Over five bike laps and five run laps it's easier to lose count than you think. Simple tricks work: rubber bands on your wrist that you pull off each lap, or a watch with a manual lap button. Decide before the start where a lap ends for you, and always press there.
The lap course has upsides too. The organiser calls it "flat and extremely fast" (source: triathlon-hannover.de, news of 3 September 2026). You run the same stretch several times, know every corner after the first lap and can pace off it. Runners used to track sessions or parkrun-style loops will feel at home.
The 2026 schedule split the day in three. The Olympic distance went off in four waves at 8:00, 8:30, 9:00 and 9:30. Then the lake belonged to the Bundesliga (Germany's national triathlon league): 2nd division at 12:00 (men) and 12:45 (women), 1st division at 14:00 and 15:15. The sprint only started in the late afternoon, between 16:45 and 17:30 (source: triathlon-hannover.de, 2026 schedule).
If you race the sprint, that's a rare chance: in the afternoon you can watch the league race on exactly the course you'll ride and run a few hours later. In 2026 Hannover hosted the season finale. Franka Rust won the women's race in 59:43, the only woman under an hour; Jack Willis won the men's race. Over the Olympic distance, Alexander Brennecke and Jule Foelckel won; the sprint went to Sven Kiene and Eva Zimmermann (source: triathlon-hannover.de, race report of 6 September 2026).
Plan that day deliberately, though: a 17:00 start means not spending hours on your feet and eating properly. For the Olympic distance it's the opposite – bib pick-up opened at 6:30.
In 2026 the price rose by date in five steps. The sprint cost €65 until 15 January, €79 from May to July and €95 in the final days. The Olympic distance ranged from €79 to €120, relays from €95 to €150 (source: triathlon-hannover.de, 2026 fees). If you don't hold a German triathlon licence you add a day licence: €3 for the sprint, €15 for the Olympic distance (source: triathlon-hannover.de, 2026 fees).
The expensive late tiers were theory, though: on 22 July 2026 the organiser announced that every distance, relays included, was sold out (source: triathlon-hannover.de, news of 22 July 2026). If you want to race in 2027, be there when registration opens rather than waiting for summer. Once the 2027 date and prices are out, check the official Hannover Triathlon site.
For spectators the lap course is ideal: the Landesmuseum, the New Town Hall, Kurt-Schwitters-Platz and the whole of Rudolf-von-Bennigsen-Ufer are passed several times during the race, and in 2026 an expo with catering was open on Saturday from 7:30 to 20:00 (source: triathlon-hannover.de, spectator info). If you're there to cheer someone on, you don't have to choose between bike and run – you'll see them go past again and again.
Getting there: the organiser recommends U-Bahn lines 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 11 to Aegidientorplatz, a few minutes' walk from the northern shore. By car, the NUNAV app guides you to a free parking space, according to the organiser; spaces nearby are limited. Showers and changing rooms are at the TKH club on Maschstraße, about 500 metres from the finish (source: triathlon-hannover.de, general info and travel/parking).
The same organiser puts on other races at the Maschsee and in the city: the ADAC Marathon Hannover, which takes place on 11 April 2027 (source: triathlon-hannover.de, news of 6 July 2026), and the New Year's Eve run on a 6 km loop around the Maschsee (source: triathlon-hannover.de, home page). That makes it easy to frame a year that peaks with a September triathlon: the Hannover Marathon in spring, company and evening runs like B2Run Hannover or SportScheck RUN Hannover in summer, and the Silvesterlauf (New Year's Eve run) Hannover to close the year. All dates are listed under running events in Hannover.
The run at the Maschsee is the part you can most easily train with others. Many Lauftreffs (group runs) and run clubs in Hannover have fixed weekly sessions – see running in Hannover.
