The registration page puts it plainly: registration for the Mainova IRONMAN Frankfurt European Championship 2027 is sold out. That applies to the regular entry as well as all bundles and the packages with the official travel partner NIRVANA – every option is marked "Sold Out" (ironman.com, page Registration).
If you are already registered and can't start: deferring, transferring or withdrawing with a partial refund is only possible in writing and no later than 45 days before race day (ironman.com, page Registration).
Checked against IRONMAN's official pages, this is what remains for 2027.
Waiting list: there isn't one. The race FAQ answers the question about a waiting list with a clear no. What does exist is a notification: on the registration page you can sign up to be informed if additional places become available and to hear about dates for the next edition (ironman.com, pages FAQ and Registration).
Event partners: possible, but not named. According to the FAQ, the field consists of regular places and guaranteed places for event partners. After regular registration closes, these partners may still be able to offer places. IRONMAN does not say who the partners are for Frankfurt 2027. The official travel partner NIRVANA offers hotels and service packages on its Frankfurt page, but no race entries (nirvanaeurope.com, as of 2 October 2026).
IRONMAN Xclusive Challenge: not for Frankfurt. The premium XC programme holds back places even at sold-out races – but Frankfurt is not in the 2027 XC calendar. IRONMAN Hamburg on 6 June 2027, however, is: regular registration there is sold out too, but places are still available through XC (ironman.com, pages XC 2027 and IRONMAN Hamburg). According to IRONMAN, the packages with entry, hotel and VIP services cost between 7,900 and about 17,000 US dollars.
Relay: not an option. Relays exist only at some 70.3 races, not at the full IRONMAN distance (ironman.com, FAQ).
Switching from another race: doesn't work. The free transfer in the Flex90 programme only applies to races that still have regular places (ironman.com, page Registration). You can't get into a sold-out Frankfurt this way.
A place under the counter: hands off. Race packs are handed out only against photo ID and only to the registered person, not even with a power of attorney (ironman.com, page Registration).
Be there as a volunteer. If you want to experience the course from the inside, you can sign up as a helper. In 2026 the shifts ran from 21 to 29 June, most of them on race day; tasks were assigned in order of registration (ironman.com, page Volunteer).
A different race in 2027. The obvious alternatives in Germany: IRONMAN Hamburg on 6 June 2027, the DATEV Challenge Roth on 4 July 2027 (challenge-roth.com) or, as an entry point, the middle distance at IRONMAN 70.3 Duisburg on 29 August 2027 (ironman.com). For a comparison of all the big races, see our overview The biggest triathlons and IRONMAN races in Germany.
If you want to start in Frankfurt in 2028, you need to be at least 18 on race day and hold a valid triathlon licence; without an annual licence, a one-day licence is available on site for cash (ironman.com, page Registration).
Swim. The start is at the Langener Waldsee, south of Frankfurt. 3.8 km in two laps, separated by a short land section (the "Australian exit"). According to IRONMAN the average water temperature is 23 degrees; wetsuits are allowed up to and including 24.5 degrees (ironman.com, pages Course and FAQ). You switch to the bike in Transition 1 at the lake.
Bike. 180 km over two laps, with flat, fast stretches and demanding climbs through the towns around Frankfurt (ironman.com, page Course). The climbs have names of their own: "The Beast" in Bergen-Enkheim (Marktstraße), "The Hell" in Maintal-Hochstadt (Hauptstraße) and "Heartbreak Hill" in Bad Vilbel (Frankfurter Straße), which was new on the course in 2026. In 2026 the approach to the second lap went over the Alte Brücke in the city centre (spectator guide and Athlete Guide 2026).
Run. Transition 2 is at the Mainkai. From there you head out on four flat laps of just over ten kilometres each along the Main, with the skyline in view. In 2026 the aid stations were at the Untermainbrücke, the Friedensbrücke, on the riverbank at the university hospital, at the Holbeinsteg, at the Ignatz-Bubis-Brücke, at the Mainwasenweg and at the Flößerbrücke (Athlete Guide 2026). The finish is on the Römerberg. In the 2025 Athlete Choice Awards, the run course ranked third in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (ironman.com).
Important: the maps on ironman.com are still from the previous year; the 2027 courses will be published later and may change (ironman.com, page Course).
The 24th edition on 28 June 2026 was shortened because of the forecast heat: 3.8 km swim, 125 km bike and 21.1 km run instead of the full distance (ironman.com, 28 June 2026; de.wikipedia.org). The daily high was 41 degrees (ironman.com, page Course). Among the professionals, Norway's Casper Stornes won in 4:50:23 ahead of Gustav Iden (4:52:54) and Antonio Benito López (4:54:47). Germany's Jan Stratmann finished in the top ten and secured a slot for the World Championship in Kona (ironman.com, 28 June 2026). In total, the race awarded 60 World Championship slots in 2026 (spectator guide 2026).
The course records date from years with the full distance: 7:25:57 by Kristian Blummenfelt (2025) and 8:38:44 by Daniela Ryf (2018). The first edition in Frankfurt took place on 18 August 2002 (de.wikipedia.org).
According to IRONMAN, the run course is among the best-attended in the whole IRONMAN calendar – so without an entry you're in good company. The 2027 schedule has not been published yet; for orientation, this is how 2026 went:
The organiser expressly advises against coming by car; buses and trains may be restricted along the course, with information from the RMV. You can follow the race live with the IRONMAN Tracker app (spectator guide 2026).
The date brings weather risk. The highs on race day over the last three years were 32 degrees (2024), 25 degrees (2025) and 41 degrees (2026) (ironman.com, page Course). If you start in Frankfurt, you should be prepared for heat: deliberately do long sessions in the warm hours too, test drinking and salt in training, and adjust your running pace honestly in the heat. What helps when running in the warmth is covered in our guide Running in the heat.
The marathon along the Main is flat – the challenge lies in running it after 180 kilometres on the bike. Brick sessions, meaning short runs straight after bike training, therefore belong in the plan from spring. And you can do your long runs right on the race course along the Main.
The running sessions of a long-distance build-up are long and often lonely. They don't have to be: in Frankfurt, running groups and run clubs meet regularly, many of them along the Main. Which ones exist, when they run and at what pace is shown in our overview Running in Frankfurt.
